A forgotten, or buried, story of war from the recent past.
Reviewed: 02-22-24
We are entering a time when the memory of war in America is aging out, while being involved from a distance in other regions. This could be a truly important read for gen x and younger, as a reminder of the reality of it and the need to commit to peace however we can.

Story
Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

Excellent telling of important overlooked history
Reviewed: 09-24-23
While much has been told about WWII, the precursor, how it all started, is less known. This well researched telling (very well narrated) of England and Nazi Germany in particular, of Chamberlain’s handling of Hitler and the go-between around them, is fascinating. It also reveals how the devil is in the details, the ego, and the need to believe in your own invincibility - to a fault. It also sheds light on a group of Hermans who had hoped to kill Hitler before the invasion of Czechoslovakia. There are many lessons here, but most of all, it is a bit of important history well told.

The reader was superb though the story was a bit obvious - the perpetrator is determined, for the part, much too early. I would have preferred a bit more of a cliff hanger. Characters are vivid and the overall “entertainment value” is high nonetheless.
