Story
In July 1965, teenagers Sylvia and Jenny Likens were left in the temporary care of Gertrude Baniszewski, a middle-aged single mother, and her seven children. The Baniszewski household was overrun with children. There were few rules and ample freedom. Sadly, the environment created a dangerous hierarchy of social Darwinism where the strong preyed on the weak. What transpired in the following three months was both riveting and chilling.

Evil Personified
Reviewed: 11-29-19
This is the tragic true story of a girl named Sylvia Likens from Indianapolis, Indiana. Early in the story, Sylvia’s parents place Sylvia and her younger sister in the home Gertrude Baniszewski in exchange for a small monthly fee. Unfortunately, Sylvia’s “caretaker” turns out to be an unbelievably cruel and sadistic person. “Gert” soon begins mistreating Sylvia, from what appears at first to be jealousy. Gertrude also encourages her own children, along with a few neighborhood kids-to participate in the abuse/torture of Sylvia. The acts become more violent and extreme until Sylvia Likens ultimately dies.
The things that Gertrude Baniszewski and the others did to Sylvia Likens are as horrible as anything that can be imagined. Sylvia Likens was tortured and murdered for absolutely no reason. The awful details of what took place to Sylvia are extremely disturbing and difficult to hear. Sylvia’s story is a tragic and heartbreaking tale of dehumanization, of people “looking the other way” and of the injustice of our legal system.
This is a well-written book. Steve White’s narration was clear and easy to follow.

Dystopian Collectivist Society
Reviewed: 10-06-19
I enjoyed Anthem, the science-fiction dystopian novella originally written by Ayn Rand in 1937.
The setting of the story is a collectivist society in which the concept of individuality has been eliminated. Individuality of any kind is forbidden: no one thinks for themselves: people don’t have individual names, people cannot choose their jobs or their spouse. Anyone who tries to behave in a manner different from the collective is punished. Everything about a person‘s life is chosen by the “Council”.
In the story, a man known as Equality 7-2521 rebels against the collectivist society by falling in love with a woman and covertly engaging scientific research. When the Council finds out, Equality 7-2521 flees into the wilderness with the woman he loves. Together, they plan to start a new society based on individualism.
The narrator did an excellent job reading this audiobook; his voice was pleasant and he managed to create the perfect mood for this story.

Story
On the Shortness of Life is a moral essay written by Seneca, a Roman Stoic philosopher, sometime around the year 49 AD, to his father-in-law Paulinus. The philosopher brings up many Stoic principles on the nature of time, namely that people waste much of it in meaningless pursuits. According to the essay, nature gives people enough time to do what is really important and the individual must allot it properly. In general, time is best used by living in the present moment in pursuit of the intentional, purposeful life.

This is an incredible audiobook of a work originally written 2000 years ago by Roman Stoic philosopher Seneca. It contains lots of great advice on how to live a life full of meaning. The ideas shared in this audiobook are timeless; therefore, everyone would benefit greatly by hearing the message of this audiobook.
Seneca begins by reminding us that most people reach the end of lives despairing “how little time they had to live”. Seneca goes on to explain that all of us are in fact given adequate time to live, but that most people waste it by foolishly pursuing activities and habits that are frivolous. Seneca shares some of the myriad ways people squander time, including an excessive devotion to work, overextending ourselves with distractions and unnecessary responsibilities, a reckless pursuit of the “passions” (e.g. gluttony, vanity, etc.) or spending time doing things that are pointless. These are important things to keep in mind, even for modern people who live longer because of modern medicine and technology.
So, how does Seneca believe we should spend our time? Seneca claims we should live for the day rather than waste time dwelling on the past or feeling anxious about the future. Seneca also believes that the pursuit of philosophy is the best way for a person to live a full life. While this may seem like an antiquated notion, if you substitute “pursuit of philosophy” with “pursuit of meaning” or “pursuit of wisdom/understanding”, than it makes sense and I wholeheartedly agree!
The narrator does a great job reading this audiobook; his voice was pleasant and he emphasized all of the right portions of the text.

Vampires vs. Banshees
Reviewed: 07-03-19
This audiobook is a just over two hours long, with a fast-paced, entertaining and humorous story-line about a vampire-hunting trio headed by protagonist Joe Gunn (aka “Black Irish”), girlfriend “Keela” and fellow gun Brian (aka “Brain”).
This “chapter” begins where the last one left off-and the trio soon find themselves in the middle of a clandestine war between the Vampires and the Banshees. If that weren’t enough, the Order-a vampire-hunting organization that the trio work for-has been infiltrated by vampires intent on using Black Irish and his crew to their advantage.
The characters are well-developed and engaging, especially Joe Gunn/Black Irish. A one-time “Renfield” (the slave of a vampire who finds humans for his vampire master), Black Irish is hilarious and highly entertaining!
The narrator who plays Joe Gunn does an incredible job-he really makes the character come alive.

Paraflight and the Oramite Suits
Reviewed: 07-01-19
This “chapter” of the Dark Spores series centers on a threat posed by one of Caste Republic’s most dangerous henchmen, Dimitri Petronivich, aka “Paraflight”- a Russian operative with the ability to cause temporary paralysis through touch-as well as the ability to fly. Petronovich has also figured out a way of generating Oramite suits for the Caste Republic, which poses a huge threat to Super-Normals, the Masters of Canaan and the world at large.
Although this audiobook is targeted to a young adult audience, it is an enjoyable book to listen to-regardless of age-because of its action and intrigue.
The narration is good, even if Dimitri’s accent changes over the course of the story; sometimes he sounds Russian, sometimes he sounds German, sometimes he sounds like someone from I don’t know where!

The face of Microsoft and a man now worth $92.3 billion, Bill Gates has a lot to teach us about hard work, success, kindness, unkindness, ruthlessness, tenacity, intelligence, and philanthropy - more so than might be apparent from looking at the easygoing, oft-smiling Gates. Now is as good a time as any to try and understand how a geeky kid (said with the utmost respect) from Seattle became such an ambitious and bold revolutionary in the tech world. I will do so by pointing out a few facets that I think are the most important parts of Gates' career and personality.

Bill Gates’ Rules for Success
Reviewed: 05-25-19
This audiobook offers listeners a concise summary of how Bill Gates came to be such a monumental success through the technology sector. In addition, the author outlines the “rules” that Bill Gates followed along the way (note: they are not the ones found on the Internet that were falsely attributed to Bill Gates). Examples of these “rules” include a relentless desire to learn, a ceaseless work ethic, etc. Presumably, if we learn and follows these rules, we too will become wealthy and successful. The author also gives the strategy behind each rule, along with how each strategy leads to success.
This book largely focuses on Gates’ Microsoft timeframe, and only superficially addresses Gates’ philanthropic endeavors. I wish the author had covered this aspect of Gates’ life in greater detail.
Kevin Theis does a good job narrating. He spoke clearly and his pace was good.
Overall, this is a good audiobook on how Bill Gates became successful and the steps each of us can take to become more like Bill Gates.

Story
The Tao Te Ching is a Chinese classic text traditionally credited to the 6th-century BC sage Lao Tzu. The text's authorship, date of composition, and date of compilation are debated. The Tao Te Ching, along with the Zhuangzi, is a fundamental text for both philosophical and religious Taoism. It also strongly influenced other schools of Chinese philosophy and religion, including Legalism, Confucianism, and Buddhism, which was largely interpreted through the use of Taoist words and concepts when it was originally introduced to China.

Timeless Wisdom

The Tao Te Ching is a timeless classic that offers readers an assortment of advice and wisdom. It is one of those books that you must read/listen to again and again, as it is so full of insight and observations that you absorb more of it with each encounter.
This well-known book has many (English) variations, each one varying according to the way it’s been translated from Chinese to English. Furthermore, audiobooks of this nature are greatly affected by the narrator.
Although I cannot comment on the quality of its translation-since I don’t know Chinese-I can say the narrator did an excellent job. He had a nice voice, was easy to listen to, and the material flowed well under his narration.

This was my first experience with "Hygge”, the Danish philosophy/method of how to arrange your living space. This audiobook provides a good overview of the concept.
Hygge is about creating a living space that is peaceful, cozy and inviting. It requires that our homes not be cluttered or stressful. That our possessions have purpose, or else gotten rid of. There is an emphasis on light-especially, natural light-and the flow of space.
This brief audiobook is well-organized and well-written. The narrator delivered the content in an interesting and engaging manner. It is worth checking out.

Mindfulness for Beginners

This audiobook begins with a mindfulness assessment comprised of a series of questions. Your answers to these questions are used to determine your mindfulness “score”.
This assessment is rather lengthy and involved, and the process of determining your mindfulness score requires both concentration and thought. I don’t believe an audiobook is the best delivery method for this assessment; I suggest the author include a PDF that allows listeners to more easily complete the assessment.
The second half of the book provides us with an overview of the history of mindfulness and its many benefits. It also offers a variety of strategies and exercises that can be done daily to increase mindfulness. The author suggests practicing these strategies and exercises and then taking the assessment at a later date to gauge progress. This is a good audiobook for mindfulness newbies.
The narrator does a good job delivering the content, and his voice was good for the subject at hand.

Jessica’s Challenge is the first book from this series that I’ve read/listened to. Nevertheless, I had no problem following the story. It was a quick, easy listen, and the story kept my attention. The characters were interesting and likable.
The story is about three sisters who accidentally enter a video game named Puatera and end up trapped in the game. Jessica struggles to find her sisters and the way home. They experience difficulties like hostile monkeys with tranquilizer darts and giant poisonous spiders. Jessica experiences things as if she were in an actual video game, like pop-up messages and offers, level increases, task assignments, etc.
Suzanne Barbetta does a great job narrating-she is pleasant to listen to, and she uses a distinct voice for each character in the story.
