The story of Lilith, born into slavery on a Jamaican sugar plantation at the end of the 18th century. Even at her birth, the slave women around her recognize a dark power that they - and she - will come to both revere and fear. Amazing listen

The last five hours or so pull you in with a tight grip and you cannot get away—and that’s not to say the previous chapters aren’t good, they are. While pitying Lilith, being amazed by her, and then understanding her, you’re dragged painstakingly on a journey to know to some small degree what slavery must have been like. The unbelievable pain and fear that is the characters day-to-day leaves you completely drained, then their courage and bravery opens a window to the human soul. I finished it and I can’t stop thinking about it. I am bewitched.

Story
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

The beauty of a classic and all of its allure

Madeline Miller, thank you for breathing the life into literature that we would have never gone back to otherwise. You made us feel Circe’s pain and we grew with her, experienced all things with her, cried with her. We find details on characters we could find nowhere else and they shine through Circe’s perspective. Overall, a gem.

Story
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

A story that takes you away
Reviewed: 12-07-20
What’s interesting is—it’s a fantasy novel. But as you delve into the streets of New York in a time gone by, carried by two fantastical creatures, you realize they suffer just like us humans. They have fears and desires. They love, win, and lose. And while you are finding common ground with these creatures, you come to understand yourself a bit better. Excellent story, incredible character development, and Guidall’s voice is perfect.

The character development is even better in book 2 and the adventure in this one especially takes you on a ride. You root for bad guys and wish for romances that should never be—in short, it is intoxicating. Well done.

Story
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

Best fantasy I have read in a while
Reviewed: 09-08-20
It’s tough to be as good as George RR Martin, but Chakraborty comes pretty close. Great character development, amazing action, a couple of times I could literally picture each fight scene. Amazing adult fantasy. A couple of bits get a little slow but I promise it’s worth hanging in there!!

The love between Angelo and Eva is tangible and the horrors they face slice through you and you race through it anyway having faith that everything will work out. Amazing piece of historical fiction.
