Story
The Joker is dead, but not forgotten. Gotham City is saved, but it is still not safe. By night, its new symbol of hope, Batman, continues his fight to protect the innocent and the powerless. By day, his alter ego, Bruce Wayne, wonders whether there may someday be a future beyond skulking the city’s rooftops or the cavernous halls of his stately manor alongside the ever-dutiful Alfred Pennyworth. But even after death, the Clown Prince of Crime’s imprint can be seen in more than just the pavement.

Great jump back into the Burton/‘89 Batman world!
Reviewed: 11-18-24
I really enjoyed it. There is great care by the author to lay the groundwork for a wonderfully layered story, rife with lore from the Batman mythos. Elements of the story felt like they were cherry picked from the Batman Arkham video game series, and carefully reworked into this iteration of the dark knight. Loved it. I also liked how the narrator’s personification of Batman sounded similar to Jason O’Mara who voiced the character in several DC animated projects.

Really enjoyed the story… I’ve never actually read the book, and I jumped the chance to listen to this one because it was narrated by the actor who played with the train and the short live fox series “sleepy Hollow”.

Story
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Really enjoyed this story… John Scalzi is always good for a laugh when he’s writing comedy; it was definitely a very tightly woven series of events, all interconnected with the main character at the core of it. I highly recommend the story.

Story
From Genesis to Job, the Hebrew scriptures contain some of the most influential stories in Western civilization. But what do these stories tell us about daily life in ancient Israel? And why do they still speak to us today? In 24 captivating lectures, Professor Chapman introduces you to the stories of the Judeans in exile and grounds them in their historical context, giving you a grand vision of history as presented in the scriptures.

Very informative even if feeling a bit biased

While I appreciate the lecturer was trying to talk about the historicity of ancient Israel, I think it dilutes the biblical content to ignore the theological implications. I would have also liked to have known how this branched off during the intertestamental period between the Old and New Testaments and how post-exilic Israel lived during the 400 some years prior to the time of Christ in the first century AD.

I really enjoyed how much this was a contained story with the majority of the action happening in one major location. Got a great sense of Roku’s character as well as the kind of fire lord Sozin will eventually become.

Story
Three months ago, Tansy Bloom quit monster hunting. Since then, she’s been trying to live a normal life (whatever that means), but ending up single, unemployed, and living on a boat outside her godfather’s pub definitely wasn’t part of the plan. So, when Tansy’s ex-husband – fellow monster hunter Rex Barclay – turns up like a bad penny and asks for her help with his latest investigation, Tansy reluctantly agrees. At first, the job appears to be a straightforward monster hunt – following a spate of large creature sightings, Rex believes a werewolf is on the loose in Norfolk.

Wonderful story. I liked the use of multiple narrators to give the characters distinct voices and perspectives. It was cool to see Bishop somewhat front and center… he’s kind of the antithesis of David (Prometheus/Covenant).

Very detailed but hard to follow
Reviewed: 09-13-24
The idea of what happens in the story makes sense at the end, but it’s really hard to follow. It was difficult to keep track at first of all the different characters because there were all these flashbacks set into the narrative and there was such a strong sense of stream of consciousness that it was hard to tell when the jumps happened. None of the characters were likable or endearing; I know we are supposed to root for the narrator, but I honestly couldn’t. This book felt like a bit of a slog.
