Story
It"s 1803, and an adolescent Nadya is determined not to follow in her overbearing Ukrainian mother"s footsteps. She"s a horsewoman, not a housewife. When Tsar Paul is assassinated in St. Petersburg and a reluctant and naive Alexander is crowned emperor, Nadya runs away from home and joins the Russian cavalry in the war against Napoleon. Disguised as a boy and riding her spirited stallion, Alcides, Nadya rises in the ranks, even as her father begs the tsar to find his daughter and send her home.

A Woman Ahead of her Time
Reviewed: 03-22-23
Honestly, books set in this time period usually aren"t my cup of tea but Linda Lafferty has crafted an amazing story around true history. The heroine is well fleshed out and maintains her integrity throughout the book.
The chapters flow in very a logical order and you can"t help but root for this young woman who disguised herself as a boy/man in order to fight for her country. Just when you"re getting to the end and everything is coming together, Linda Lafferty totally turns the table and blows everything out of the water.
Also loved the narration by Kathleen Gati who does amazing work with very subtle accents to give the various characters their own dimensions.
This is one of the best books I"ve read in recent months,

Story
As the war begins, Hanna Rombauer, a young German woman, is sent to live with her aunt and uncle after her mother’s death. Thrown into a life of luxury she never expected, Hanna soon finds herself unwillingly matched with an SS officer twenty years her senior. The independence that her mother lovingly fostered in her is considered highly inappropriate as the future wife of an up-and-coming officer and she is sent to a “bride school.” There, in a posh villa on the outskirts of town, Hanna is taught how to be a “proper” German wife.

Tremendous Historical Fiction
Reviewed: 05-05-22
Katherine Locke seemed to have such a grasp of the beauty of the people and the country; she truly did her homework in studying the history of the Hungarian Revolution. The main character"s connection to the river and to Budapest gave this novel a magical touch while bringing to life a seldom written-about time. The colors of the city returning during the falling rain was possibly one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever read.
As an added bonus, the narrator, Kathleen Gati is of Hungarian heritage. Her parents fled the 1956 revolution so this is something very close to her. Her narration was SO heart felt. The connection between Gati and Budapest was palpable. I"m not sure it Katherine Locke knew this when selecting a narrator but she could not have found anyone better to bring THIS REBEL HEART to life.

The Criminalist is a decent crime story and narrator Kathleen Gati does a magnificent job bringing voice to all the character. She"s especially adept at the Russian accent of the heroine.
John Houde"s personal experience in the forensic field comes through on almost every page.
The only drawback is that the romance/connection between Vika and Paul seemed very light on development. Bonding so quickly following the death of her sister seemed a bit contrived.
But, overall, this was a great book and very enjoyable to listen to.

Strength of Women
Reviewed: 02-16-21
In a time when women were mostly considered mothers and housewives, this book really shows the strength and courage of the women who were left to tend to life as their husbands were shipped off to war or work camps.
The characters are well drawn and each is given a very distinct personality by the perfect narration of Ms. Gati.

Story
Biltmore House, a palatial mansion being built by the Vanderbilts, American “royalty,” is in its final stages of construction in North Carolina. The country’s grandest example of privilege, it symbolizes the aspirations of its owner and the dreams of a girl, just as driven, who lives in its shadow. Kerry MacGregor’s future is derailed when, after two years in college in New York City, family obligations call her home to the beautiful Appalachians.

A little ambitious but...
Reviewed: 01-19-21
After reading all the negative reviews, I started to wonder if I"d read the same book! To be fair, the author was very ambitious about getting way too many characters on the canvas in the first few chapters. If you gave up after a few chapters, you missed out on a decent story. It also didn"t help that we were introduced to so many diverse backgrounds; rich aristocrats, Southern woman, a Sicilian man of dubious background, Southern children, sick father, station master, journalist, a woman from New Orleans plus a host of various workers at Biltmore; many who were also foreigners!
It was a lot to handle but Kathleen Gati gave life to each character. This distinction allowed the listener to sort out these people and their personalities while moving the story forward.
Overall, the book overcame some uneven writing at the start to become a fairly interesting and entertaining historical fiction. I"ve listened to several books narrated by Ms. Gati and have truly enjoyed her interpretation of a wide range of characters and this book was no exception.

Great Follow-up

AN ARTIFICIAL LIGHT picks up right where THE PHOTOGRAPHER left off. Set in the early 1900"s this story follows Mimi who has set out to be a traveling photographer in a profession dominated by males. Her career takes a turn off the path when she sets aside her career to care for her ailing uncle who has been her mentor.
Narrator Kathleen Gati is flawless in bringing life to Mimi as well as the many townspeople who are part of the story.
Fortunately, there are hints that Mimi"s story may continue with a third book!!!

This account of the terror wreaked upon the Jews during WWII will tear at your heart-strings. Be sure to check out the website when you"ve finished. There are pictures of the places these people were forced to hide as well as photos of the young man in the story...he"s still alive and speaks at schools.
Kathleen Gati does a wonderfully subtle job narrating this book as she gives life to the characters but remains respectful of the gravity of the situation.
