Where do we come from? How did our ancestors settle this planet? How did the great historic civilizations of the world develop? How does a past so shadowy that it has to be painstakingly reconstructed from fragmentary, largely unwritten records nonetheless make us who and what we are?
These 36 lectures bring you the answers that the latest scientific and archaeological research and theorizing suggest about human origins, how populations developed, and the ways in which civilizations spread throughout the globe.

Great Conceptually But Becoming Dated
- By JCurtis on 09-25-13
Hopelessly outdated- recorded in 2003
Reviewed: 02-07-24
Might have been worth a credit 20 years ago. Don't be misled by the "2013" release date. Perhaps that's when this joined Audible's line up? Regardless, it was actually *recorded* in 2003, and this stuff hasn't been cutting edge since the world trade center was still standing. It is interesting to hear him state dates and statistics as facts, which have been disproved. Very old-school, old British guy who *obviously* knows everything style of archeology. Boring AND wrong.

I swear, this series gets exponentially stupider with each book. I liked the 1st novel, but the 2nd one was pretty bad, and I don't know why even I tried with this one. Sunk cost fallacy? Lol.

I'm usually too lazy to write reviews, but when I saw that the highlighted review for this book was a negative one, whose main complaint was about the focus on the main character's love life, I just had to speak up. There is very little focus at all on the relationship cited by that other review - we only see our protagonist's occasional musing on a lost love from his past. It's part of the richness of the character, and frankly it's one of the ways that this book rises above this crowded genre. I hope to read more of this character's story. I want to know if he finds his brother. I want to know what secrets the librarian is hiding. I want to learn more about how that one guy ended up a porn star in the 70s. I'm definitely hooked into this world! More, please!

The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

I've listened to 3 or 4 audiobooks a week for a decade, so I've long since plowed through most of the science fiction. This book is a surprise new favorite! If you like Neal Stephenson, I think you'll enjoy this story. It's light reading, without being lightweight.

So, I bought this on sale. In the interest of full disclosure; I'm credit-stingy, but audio-slutty. I'll buy almost any "Deal of the Day," if I'm between credits. But this book turned out to be so riveting that I encourage even my fellow credit-misers to unclench. Try this one. It may not be high art- but if you like loveable protagonists, hateable villians, and happy endings, then you'll get your credit's worth here.
