Story
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

Disappointing
Reviewed: 06-30-24
Grisham usually writes a spellbinding story. This book was hard to even finish. Several times I found my mind wandering to other things during my listening time. I had 30 minutes left and didn't even care about what would happen. The story was disjointed. The characters were underdeveloped.

After fleeing an abusive husband with her six-year-old son, Tommie, Beverly is attempting to create a new life for them in a small town off the beaten track. Despite their newfound freedom, Beverly is constantly on guard: she creates a fake backstory, wears a disguise around town, and buries herself in DIY projects to stave off anxiety. But her stress only rises when Tommie insists he’d been hearing someone walking on the roof and calling his name late at night.

Not my Favorite
Reviewed: 10-06-22
The two perspectives are hard to switch back and forth between. Beverly's sub story was so hard to listen to that I had the narration speed at over 2x. The story is really about her. The author takes us into her mind and thoughts in great detail. It would have been better if we could have seen Paige's character or Colby and Paige's story in more depth. That would have made this a great book.

Story
Jubilee tells the true story of Vyry, the child of a white plantation owner and his black mistress. Vyry bears witness to the South's antebellum opulence and to its brutality, its wartime ruin, and the promises of Reconstruction. Weaving her own family's oral history with 30 years of research, Margaret Walker's novel brings the everyday experiences of slaves to light. Jubilee churns with the hunger, the hymns, the struggles, and the very breath of American history.

This was a easy listen. There are a few recipes- I wish when we purchase an Audible book, it would come with supplemental pages for reference material or a free Kindle book.
Jen narrates and her personality will make you laugh out loud. I appreciate her honesty and her perspective on life, family, and friends. #audicted #friends #self-effacing #humor #family #tagsgiving #sweepstakes
