Narrator’s voice is fine, BUT the fact that she said “Walter” instead of “Walther” took me out of the book. And who pronounces “wanly” wrong? I made it through 2 chapters. Cheesy dialogue, poor writing.., Wasted my money.

Ruth, a Black woman who played a role in the show, is thrilled to be part of it—until she discovers her performance is all too convincing. Grammar snobs, read my review.
Reviewed: 12-23-22
I only listened to a few minutes and had to stop. I’ll admit to being a grammar snob. First she said “haphazardly” as “halfhazardly”. I thought to myself that it was one word, and soldiered on. Then (about 2 sentences later) she pronounced “mumu” as “mew mew”. I’m finished.

Story
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Not enough Harry, but still excellent.

For all you whiners - so funny that masks are a political statement. Was there a little political commentary, yes, but guess what? That’s the author’s prerogative. Ballard also discussed the lack of $$ for police programs due to all the $$ going to monitor the BLM protests. None of the whiners mention that. I agree there was too many mask mentions, but the 2 storylines were excellent and I thought Lakin did an admirable narration. The book kept me riveted.

Boring. Law aspect was all wrong.
Reviewed: 07-07-22
I found Hannah unlikeable since she justified doing anything and everything in pursuit of her “justice”. So disappointed. So much rang false. I’m no lawyer but everything regarding the case background and court proceedings were easily determined (even by a layperson) to be bs. And the twist at the very end? Ridiculous.

Wow! Previous reviews have said it: riveting, great characters, slow burn, wonderful narration, etc. I listened almost every chance I had. I forced myself to not listen some of the time so I could stretch out my enjoyment, but I still burned through it much too fast. A gem of a Jewell story.

Ike Randolph has been out of jail for fifteen years, with not so much as a speeding ticket in all that time. But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid. The last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered, along with Isiah’s white husband, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss. Derek’s father Buddy Lee was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed his father was a criminal. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld, though, and he wants to know who killed his boy.

Justifying murders for revenge's sake
Reviewed: 07-20-21
I enjoyed the way it started, and thought I would really enjoy it, but it was ultra-violent (which I often love, but not in this case) with 2 unlikely protagonists who justify everything they do (numerous murders) in the name of vengeance. There are no characters to root for since they are all morally compromised - no one is virtuous.. Lots of suspension of disbelief. Homophobia that is supposed to be overcome in a matter of days, but then it isn't, but then it s - not believable.. Narrator's voices mostly sounded the same, so it was a good thing the dialogue almost all consisted of "said Grayson", "said Ike", etc. so the listener didn't have to figure it out. Additionally, there were numerous words that were mispronounced - was there no sound editor? (or whatever you call a person who makes sure everything is pronounced correctly in an audiobook). .
