1876. In the glittering world of Manhattan's upper crust, women are valued by their pedigree, dowry, and, most importantly, connections. They have few rights and even less independence - what they do have is society. The more celebrated the hostess, the more powerful the woman. And none is more powerful than Caroline Astor - the Mrs. Astor.

Another great addition to this series. Fast-paced and excellently narrated.
As for T**** supporters claiming that this book is politically biased, IT IS NOT! T**** name was mentioned in passing during the voir dire (jury selection) part of Mickey's trial, and that was later on in the book. Additionally, for context, the timeline of the book was written right after the first few (very few) cases hit the States, but way before mandatory masks and shutdowns went into effect.
There aren't any political rantings or lambasting to distract from the premise of the book, which ultimately was Mickey fighting for his legal life.
Get the book! It's a quick and enjoyable listen.

Story
Coach Randy is working mightily to keep it together, and not simply with his vaguely unhappy wife, distant child, and a new boss who's eliminating half the sales force. This season's soccer parents are a demanding bunch. Diane's wine-fueled group emails are almost unintelligible; team mom Jacqui's enthusiasm for the league verges on manic; a divorced couple can barely conceal their murderous rage at each other; and another mom is laser-focused on schooling everyone on what constitutes a healthy snack option.

I'll admit I didn't expect to like the book, I chose it in the 2 for 1 sale because the pickings were slim but I'm glad I did.
Who knew the world of kids soccer was fraught with so much hilarity, drama, cluelessness and pain.
The author paints an all too clear picture of how lives that are seemingly perfect, are truly a facade of insecurity and self doubt. I found bits of people I've dealt with my life including myself.
I enjoyed the format in which it was written. Mainly because it is the way we all communicate today. I also liked that the author included the voices and thoughts of the children. It made it not all about the parents and their inadequacies.
All in all, the book had a well paced balance of humor, empathy and redemption. It's relatable and I think most would enjoy it!

Story
Ellen Boehm, a single mom from St. Louis, Missouri, appeared devoted to her children. But in reality, she was unequipped for motherhood, financially strapped, and desperate. Within a year of each other, her sons, ages two and four, died mysteriously, and Boehm's eight-year-old daughter then suffered a near-fatal mishap when a hair dryer fell into the girl's bath. While neighbors wondered how Boehm remained so calm through it all, Det. Sgt. Joseph Burgoon of St. Louis Homicide had darker suspicions.

Dry, Robotic Narration...and something else...
Reviewed: 10-05-22
I soldiered on because the story itself was interesting and I wanted to know more about Ellen Boehm. However, the narration was so rote and monotone.
Additionally, there seemed to be an unusual fixation on the subject's weight and unattractive features.
I understand the need to describe a person's physical attributes for the sake of readers and listeners but her appearance seemed to be brought up several times unnecessarily.
What was particularly irksome was the consistent use of the fat over and over, and given the narrator's emotionless delivery I have to admit I cringed a little or rather a lot.
I felt like the author wanted to make a point that she was just as ugly as her deeds. Its not her fault she wasn't conventionally attractive and gained weight as a result of successive childbearing.
I have very little sympathy for this woman and what she's done, she is in many ways a delusional sociopath who is where she needs to be. I just thought the book could have focused less on appearance and more the psychological aspects of what made this woman turn into a remorseless killer.

Great listen!! I'm still not sure what all the complaints were about from other listeners.
To me, the chat dialogue brought a lot more authenticity to the entire premise of the book.
I didn't find it as "painful" as most comments suggests and I'm certainly not a part of the "hastag/social media" generation. If anything, it made me listen more intently and kept me on my toes as the plot progressed.
Don't be discouraged potential listeners, this book was excellently written and performed as was every other title in this brilliant series.

Absolutely enjoyed this rendition of these fantastic tales.
The inclusion of Madam Pince's introduction really humanizes her character and softens the librarian's hawk-like demeanor and protection of her precious books as portrayed in the books.
Each reader's performance was very well done. I especially enjoyed Albus Dumbledore's personal interpretations of each story and useful notes interjected.
The standout performance however, goes to Noma Dumezweni reading of The Tale of the Three Brothers. Absolutely captivating and enthralling performance of the Deathly Hallows. I truly didn't want her to end.
Splendid job by all.

I stumbled on this little gem by accident on a rainy, dull weekend. The overall story had an interesting premise and a clever albeit disturbing twist.
I have to admit though, I felt like there could be so much more. The last few chapters seemed a bit rushed coming to end and I was expecting more revelations.
The narrator was in a word, incredible. I've seen Jason O'Mara's work, mostly in TV and he's a pretty solid actor, but his performance in this audio was top notch. Every character, personality, nationality was performed seamlessly. I'm surprised he hasn't done more audio readings.
I look forward to reading Book 2, with any luck this could become a fantastic series.

Father of cyberpunk William Gibson’s original script for Alien III, written in 1987 as a sequel to Aliens, never made it to our screens, although it went on to achieve cult status among fans as the third instalment that might have been after being leaked online. This terrifying, cinematic multicast dramatisation - directed by the multi-award-winning Dirk Maggs - is the chance to experience William Gibson’s untold story and its terrifying, claustrophobic and dark encounters between humans and aliens, as a completely immersive audio experience.

Another winner in this series. I really do enjoy Dirk Maggs' take on the Alien saga.
For those who haven't seen the movies (weird), this episode picks up at the end of Aliens 2 after they escape LV-426 and vanquish the queen alien into space.
The events of this novel however, does not pickup where Ripley, Newt, Hicks and Bishop crash land on the convict colony as in the Aliens 3 movie.
Their escape pod is infiltrated by the Alien as in the 2nd movie, however the craft is intercepted by another exploration spacecraft and Ripley and the others are (Hicks, Newt, Bishop) actually alive.
Though Ripley doesn't play a significant role in the one, the twist however, surrounds the Alien that survived, which adds a whole new dimension the saga.
You can expect Whelan-Yutani's typical ruthlessness to stop at nothing to achieve it's goals. The added bonus of Michael Biehn and Lance Henriksen who played Hicks and Bishop respectively in the movies added authenticity to the narration and made this all the more enjoyable.
This was another great adaptation and makes for a easy if not on edge listen. Alien fans will enjoy!!

I bought this book on a fluke. I was bored and needed something to distract me and glad I used the credit.
I have to admit this was a gem in the rough. Didn't expect to like it but I was caught by dry humor and well paced dialogue.
It's not much different from most PI novels but the plot and performance kept me listening. The narrator did a fantastic job.
I'm definitely getting the rest of the series and add to my summer reading list.

“You shouldn’t be here. It’s too late....” These, heard over the phone, were the last recorded words of successful celebrity-divorce lawyer Richard Pryce, found bludgeoned to death in his bachelor pad with a bottle of wine - a 1982 Chateau Lafite worth £3,000, to be precise. Odd, considering he didn’t drink. Why this bottle? And why those words? And why was a three-digit number painted on the wall by the killer? And, most importantly, which of the man’s many, many enemies did the deed?

This Follow up in the Hawthorne Series did not disappoint. I had this in my wishlist for months when book 2 was announced.
Rory Kinnear's performance was brilliant as ever. No one captures the uniqueness of each character as he does.
The premise of this mystery was intriguing from the get go. What makes me enjoy these books is how effortlessly Mr. Horowitz intertwines his own real life into fiction.
Hope Book 3 comes soon!!!
