Depressing and formula at the same time

By far the most depressing in the series. You get to listen to Reacher destroy his career and loose a very precious family member. The story/mystery itself is ridiculous and drawn out. Reacher as a character did not develop. He still goes on about his height and strength and coffee and of course has a female partner that he has to bed. After this I see no other reason to continue the series and unless you are a die hard fan, I would skip this one all together. Narrator excellent, he is what kept me going to the end.

If you are lookingfor a good legal thriller than this is not the book for you. Characters unlikeable, writing very amateurish. Makes you wonder how some people get published and shockingly turns this into a series that continues to get get published. Normally I really like the narrator Vivienne Leheny, many of my favorte authors (e.g. Lisa Ungler, Amber Garza, Margot Hunt) use her for audio readings, but it didn't work with this story. Story could have been interesting but missed the mark. If you want better legal thrillers than I would suggest the Barbara Holloway series (Kate Wilhem), Morgan Dane series (Melinda Leigh) or the Nate Sheppard (Michael Stagg). I would not recommend or will not continue with this series. I only made it through by speeding up and skipping parts.

He started the fire. Nate Shepherd's client didn't intend to kill anyone. That doesn't matter. After an old friend recruits him, Nate Shepherd heads north to defend a teenager charged with igniting a blaze that killed a toddler and a firefighter. When he arrives, Nate finds a neglected case and a looming trial date for double murder. As he scrambles to discover what happened, Nate is resisted by a stonewalling prosecutor and a grieving town, each bent on punishing his client. Worse, every fact Nate uncovers confirms that his client started the tragic Mission Road fire.

Somehow this story did not stand up as good as the others to me. I found the small town mentality and prosecutor not just unlikeable but reprehensible., considering the current state of our nation, I use reading and listening as an escape and found the charcaters to be too real and juddging. Plus the story itself arson/murder was not compelling. Didn't like the ending. I think Nate should have taken the offer with conditions so that an entire world of possibilties could open up within the series. Still the actual writing is excellent and narration as always is above average. Would recommend but hope that the next in the series take a bit of a direction change.

The year is 1920: Flying in the face of convention, legendary American adventuress Beryl Helliwell never fails to surprise and shock. The last thing her adoring public would expect is that she craves some peace and quiet. The humdrum hamlet of Walmsley Parva in the English countryside seems just the ticket. And, honestly, until America comes to its senses and repeals Prohibition, Beryl has no intention of returning stateside and subjecting herself to bathtub gin.

Really so-so

This isn't the worst book I ever read, but will not continue with the series. First the characters were not likeable - a prim and proper spinster and an overly brash American just wasn't for me. Most the of support characters were forgettable but wish the the gardner was brought in as part of the team sooner. The book itself was obviously written for an American audience. The verbage was sophmoric. Someone in another review compared it to Midsomer Murders which I think was an insult to Caroline Graham. At least it was included in my memberhip so I didn't lose anything but time (but then I usually multitask when listening). The narrator needs to lay off the cigarettes and learn that reading/storytelling requires a certain skill set that she needs to work on. On the story itself, it could have been decent if the editor had call for more rewrites - plenty of other reviews give detail.

Interesting story. Additionally, I like the way the author handled the love quaundry of Bruno. I was team Isabelle believeing that she understand Bruno's job and persona better but than the author has develped the character Pamela more and now I am not so sure. Just as I am looking forward to another Bruno mystery/crime, I am also looking forward to the other charcaters as they are being well developed and an important part of the stories and Bruno's life...Spoler, a main character dies that is very very sad and wonder how that will move forward.

Did not enjoy story or narration. I believe the writer is not as witty and clever or creative as they think they are and I blame the editor for letting this story go through. Shocking that it is a series. Needless to say I won't continue nor would I recommend.

Story
Bruno is a former soldier who has embraced the pleasures and slow rhythms of country life - living in his restored shepherd's cottage; patronizing the weekly market; sparring with, and basically ignoring, the European Union bureaucrats from Brussels. He has a gun but never wears it; he has the power to arrest but never uses it. But then the murder of an elderly North African who fought in the French army changes everything and galvanizes Bruno's attention.

If you like the MC Beaton series of Scottish Cop Hamish MacBeth then you will love. Bruno, is a small town cop, who is smart but not ambitious, that is beoved by community, single of course and not conventional. Not so much a mystery thriller as a story with a murder in it, but very enjoyable. I did not guess the killer, so that was good. i am going to move on and read the next in the series.

Enjoying this series much more than the Kurt Harm books (which I gave up on). It first I was unsure of reading more in series because Dan Radford appeared to be an inept assasain who made too many mistakes to be at the top of his game as he was known. At this point, it works and love that his wife becomes aware of his occupation. Took a point off the rating because of AI reading - though not not horrible, just devoid of human character, inflection and emotion. Will continue with series.

This is the second book I read by the author. I would read/listen to other books by her, but I wouldn't call her storytelling brilliant., and this was no exception. By the time we got to the twist that revealed the "bad guy", I no longer cared and had the narration sped up just to finish. The premise started out interesting but then I felt like it was dragged out. It read somewhat like a YA story. Performance excellent,
