This was the last Jodi Picoult book I can bring myself to finish

Okay, conspiracy theory aside…
The romance writing for present and past is just lazy and falls on too many tropes.
The way the author insults neurodivergent hyper-fixation and special interests is just gross.
She insults the NEW YORK TIMES as if the renowned publication would just go to print in the way portrayed in what is supposed to be some big plot twist. To describe your own subpar plot as Shakespearian is laughable.
The author doesn’t seem to have much consideration for domestic violence victims.
The way she handled race as a topic was just dismissive.
It should have ended 3 hours sooner than it did. Just insisted on itself.

Ive finished many Jodi Picoult books and usually I can overlook and just roll my eyes at a LOT of the author’s literary choices. Usually the writing itself is at least decent. But oof, I’m out. Sorry Jodi, there just won’t be a next time.

This author wrote in such a relatable way that makes you love the characters immediately. Thoughtful backstories that connect their present selves and great use of imagery to describe scenes.

We need more bartenders to read this and be available to help more people on dates with sketchy characters.

Of all the self-help books on healing past traumas, setting boundaries and dealing with toxic patterns from family of origin… This one gets right down to it!

A positive: The examples from couples are interesting at times.
Author is definitely privileged. She is very repetitive about complaints. The process seems rigid with owning the entire task instead of dividing responsibilities. And it seems exhausting to trade cards every day or week for daily/weekly tasks.

I really should have read the reviews before listening. I had finished the last two by this author - Behind Close Doors was interesting, the second one wasn’t great, and now this one just seemed to go on in a way that you don’t feel for any of the characters but kinda want to know how it ends just to see where it’s going. But once you have a theory it just affirms your theory. Not great.

Positive review! Definitely an interesting storyline. I would absolutely recommend this “page-turner”. This would make a suspenseful movie that I’d see in theaters.
