Story
Demons. Monsters. Witches. James Crowley’s sacred duty as a Black Badge is to hunt them down and send them packing, banish them from the mortal realm for good. He didn’t choose this life. No. He didn’t choose life at all. Shot dead in a gunfight many years ago, now he’s stuck in purgatory, serving the whims of the White Throne to avoid falling to Hell. Not quite undead, though not alive either, the best he can hope for is to work off his penance and fade away.

I am not only impressed by the narration, but also the originality, writing and consistency throughout. It’s a good yarn with an intriguing twist at the end. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

Story
A clear-sighted revelation, a deep penetration into the world of Scientology by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Looming Tower, the now-classic study of al-Qaeda’s 9/11 attack. Based on more than two hundred personal interviews with current and former Scientologists—both famous and less well known—and years of archival research, Lawrence Wright uses his extraordinary investigative ability to uncover for us the inner workings of the Church of Scientology.

Lengthy, but detailed and interesting account of Scientology from before the beginning right up to almost the present day. It’s really mind boggling, and says a lot about what a desperate person will overlook in order to think they’ve made a discovery that no one else they know has made. It’s equally sad, frustrating, and infuriating.

Story
From the cramped bowels of a dimly lit radio station, Ghost Radio is beamed onto the airwaves. More than a call-in show to tell scary stories, Ghost Radio is a sanctuary for those sleepless denizens of the night, lost halfway between this world and the next. Joaquin, the host, slowly he finds himself unable to distinguish between the real world and the world populated by the nightmares on Ghost Radio.

Strange, but definitely worth the time
Reviewed: 04-15-23
I had to go back to the beginning and re-listen to the first four or five chapters just to get the ‘who did what’ stuff straight . . . and it’s definitely strange . . . but the author has definitely done their research regarding myths, Central American history and religion, new age beliefs, etc. I was sure that the ending would be ambiguous and unsatisfying - but am happy to report that I was wrong. This story has a sloooooooow start, but definitely moves along toward an “I didn’t see that coming!” ending.

All great (creepy, scary, etc., etc.) short stories - every last one! Normally with a short story collection I read one or two as time allows between novels, but this started off so enjoyably that I devoured it - start to finish - in a single day. Highly recommended!

When I finished Orlando People and rushed back to buy Dade County Death Cruise I saw a review that said it wasn't as good as the first book. I was a little disappointed, but bought it anyway and started it immediately. What book did that other reviewer read?!? This was different - yes - but why would you want to read the same book over and over again? I love how the characters are growing and changing, while the problems of the world continue on. If you enjoyed Orlando People, I think you'll enjoy this book. If you haven't read OP, I would recommend reading that one first - they're both just So Much Fun!

Story
Gretch Wolgast is a bit of a dud. Just ask her. She’s a 21-year-old college dropout who has a loser job at the mall. Sure, she can lift a tennis ball with her telekinetic powers. But only three feet in the air. And she has to be sitting. Gretch is an OP, one of thousands born in Orlando, Florida, in the early 1980s who mysteriously developed the ability to move things with their minds. Unfortunately, she turned out to be the weakest of the bunch. Now, Gretch’s life is being turned upside down. She witnesses a murder and discovers a wide-ranging conspiracy.

I bought this when it was first released, then it languished in my library until someone (from California) in an online book club gave it a 5-star recommendation. So, I downloaded it and gave it a try. I Loved It! It's clever, funny, entertaining, and a bunch of other words that mean I really enjoyed it. I hope there will be lots and lots more about Gretch Wolgast in the future. Highly recommended, and if you live anywhere near central Florida you HAVE to read it.

Story
Toni and Agatha are in the car on the way to Officer Bill Wong’s long-awaited wedding when, much to their shock, a naked young man bursts through a hedge on the side of the road and comes running toward them. Terrified, he explains that he has just seen a dead body in the woods. Toni lends him an old t-shirt to cover himself, Agatha calls the police, and the young man takes them to the spot where he saw the body, across from a meadow where the Mircester Naturist Club is due to have its annual summer barbecue.
