Story
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Meryl Streep is fantastic (duh), and the characters in this are rich and well-developed. The story is solid, if a bit too drawn out in parts. Enjoyable listen.

I enjoyed the story but it left me wanting a little more…lots of heavy issues tackled here but some not fleshed out very well. Narrator was AMAZING, however!

Story
In 2016, Amy Tan grew overwhelmed by the state of the world: Hatred and misinformation became a daily presence on social media, and the country felt more divisive than ever. In search of peace, Tan turned toward the natural world just beyond her window and, specifically, the birds visiting her yard. But what began as an attempt to find solace turned into something far greater—an opportunity to savor quiet moments during a volatile time, connect to nature in a meaningful way, and imagine the intricate lives of the birds she admired.

Don’t Recommend As An Audiobook
Reviewed: 06-02-24
If you’re into birds you’ll appreciate Amy Tan’s journal of her experience in backyard birding; if you’re not, you’ll either be inspired or bored. I don’t recommend ‘reading’ this in Audiobook format because a main feature of the book is the inclusion of beautiful illustrations Tan drew herself, and of course you can’t see them when listening.

Story
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Had potential
Reviewed: 03-05-24
I feel like this had so much potential but the characters weren’t particularly likable, the big reveal came off a little cheesy, and it ended rather abruptly. It was performed well, however, and was still a whodunnit that kept my attention.

Story
For the past century, scientists and naturalists have been steadily unravelling the secrets of bird migration. How and why birds navigate the skies, traveling from continent to continent—flying thousands of miles across the earth each fall and spring—has continually fascinated the human imagination, but only recently have we been able to fully understand these amazing journeys.

Very well-written and enjoyable account of the history and science behind studying bird migration. As a birder and environmental biologist I had no trouble with the scientific aspects, but people with less familiarity might struggle a bit - not enough to take away from the story though! If you love birds, definitely give it a read.

Story
Mia, the irreverent, hyperanalytical twenty-year-old daughter, has an explanation for everything—which is why she isn’t initially concerned when her father and younger brother Eugene don’t return from a walk in a nearby park. They must have lost their phone. Or stopped for an errand somewhere. But by the time Mia’s brother runs through the front door bloody and alone, it becomes clear that the father in this tight-knit family is missing and the only witness is Eugene, who has the rare genetic condition Angelman syndrome and cannot speak.

Intelligently written
Reviewed: 01-21-24
So intelligently written with an important message about neurodiversity woven within the fictional story. I kept thinking this is a book I would have liked even better if I’d read it rather than listened… although the narrator has a great voice and enunciates/emotes beautifully, I guess the character of Mia just grated on my nerves at times. Perhaps if her character had been voiced in my head she would have annoyed me less, but maybe not. Overall, a really great book and great performance!
