Story
UrbanMyth: It was lauded as an alternative to the performative, show-your-best-self platforms—an anonymous discussion board grouped by zip code. The residents of Manhattan’s exclusive Upper East Side disclosed it all, things they would never share with their friends or their spouses: secret bank accounts, steamy affairs, tidbits of juicy gossip. So when a “hacktivist” group breaks into the forum and exposes the real identity of each poster, the repercussions echo down Park Avenue with a force that none could have anticipated.

Why does no one write likeable characters anymore?
Reviewed: 08-16-24
Another domestic mystery full of characters that are shallow, narcissistic, petty, insensitive and irritating. This genre could yield such slyly subtle and chilling stories but I just keep stumbling across books that don't give me anyone to root for. These crappy people don't even get a satisfying comeuppance. The performer is very good at voicing annoying and silly people- it's not her fault I kept skipping ahead.

Fun but predictable plot, annoying main character
Reviewed: 08-02-23
I enjoyed the fun plot, funny side characters and descriptions of the slightly gloomy, beautiful setting. I thought the character of Laine was well explored- she's a bit of an archetype but a well fleshed out one. The main character was self loathing for no apparent reason, endlessly gullible and apparently lacks a spine until the action filled climax (action which was totally ill-fitting with the overall tone). Also I almost never guess the bad guy correctly but I did this time which made the mystery less fun for me. Great performance from the narrator, she was perfect.

What’s in a label? Are we the product of our upbringing or do we have a natural propensity towards good or evil? The eternal question of nature vs nurture is at the centre of Dr Diane Buckley’s world. A talented freelance forensic psychologist who has never quite found the key to engaging with people on a casual level, she is drafted in to examine a grisly murder – a body found in a children’s playground.

No. Just no.

The biggest problem is that I can't tell the difference between half of the voices in the cast so I have to try to figure out who is speaking based on context which was often difficult (no I'm not hard of hearing). The main character is a psychologist who can't see serious mental illness in her own daughter, refuses to listen to anyone around her about anything ever and makes choices that are so stupid that it beggars belief. I am so tired of authors who have these supposedly intelligent women act impossibly stupid and for what? A predictable, unsuspenseful storyline and a boring "romance" side plot. Made it a little over half-way before I had to turn it off.

Story
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

I cannot with this narrator

I am trying to get through this book but Judy Greer's voice and performance are making it very difficult. actors are not automatically good at audio book narration. hire voice actors instead please. this is almost "unlistenable". the story is ok and the only reason I keep trying. edit- it just keeps getting worse. the "sound effects". the ridiculous choices. I can't wait until all of these characters are eaten.

Story
Hovern Bog. People live in terror of it - especially the residents of Fenchurch St. Jude, the little village located at its edge. They think of it as a living being. When 2,000-year-old bodies are recovered from the bog, perfectly preserved, it is the discovery of a lifetime for archaeologist David Macauley. But close examination of the corpses reveals a curious fact: all were cruelly, mysteriously murdered, gnawed to death by some unimaginable creature.

I grew to despise the main character guy
Reviewed: 04-01-22
I understand that this was written 40 years ago but the misogyny and acceptance of child abuse was difficult to read. Most of the character are unlikable. The main character is a selfish, angry idiot. I'm sad that I wasted the credit.

Story
Brad Woods has performed a lot of autopsies, but never one like this. The body is purged of all blood. Fear has made Sue Wing run from the darkened school and into night, a fear so powerful she can only name it using the Cantonese myths of her grandmother: Cup-hu-girngsi, the corspe who drinks blood. Reporters like Rich Carter don't believe in the supernatural, but all the signs are pointing to the same conclusion: a vampire is stalking the streets of Rio Verde. No, Rich Carter doesn't believe in such things. Not yet.

OK story, very uncomfortable racist themes
Reviewed: 03-18-22
It seems that Bentley Little cannot write a book that doesn't feature overt, ugly, graphic racist abuse. This one featured anti-asian racism. As an Asian listener, some passages were genuinely uncomfortable to listen to. I skipped a few portions because it was not only uncomfortable, it was repetitive. The Haunted by the same author, features anti-Indigenous racism and another one of his features anti-Hispanic violence. If you are looking for escapism without racist violence, maybe look elsewhere.

Great for Night Vale fans but...
Reviewed: 09-07-18
This book is a must for any fan of the podcast as it is narrated by Cecil Baldwin and allows you to spend hours immersed in the spooky desert town we love, rather than a measly 15 min. The storyline was mysterious enough to keep you listening and is explained relatively well, compared with the impenetrable mysteries of ye podcast. My main issue was that one of the two protagonists is extremely unlikable. Diane comes across as nagging, she is none too bright and makes the same mistakes over and over again. She's so annoying, it will keep me from reading or listening a second time.
The second Night Vale book (It Devours) is 10x better. Try that one instead unless you are a die hard fan.
