A good story, well told. I love that the protagonist is so tragically flawed, so stubborn and blind in he righteous fury. She is so like Maddie, in True Grit.

Story
Three months ago, Tansy Bloom quit monster hunting. Since then, she’s been trying to live a normal life (whatever that means), but ending up single, unemployed, and living on a boat outside her godfather’s pub definitely wasn’t part of the plan. So, when Tansy’s ex-husband – fellow monster hunter Rex Barclay – turns up like a bad penny and asks for her help with his latest investigation, Tansy reluctantly agrees. At first, the job appears to be a straightforward monster hunt – following a spate of large creature sightings, Rex believes a werewolf is on the loose in Norfolk.

Strong characters, great images, terrific narration. A little short on action scenes, and a little long on the inner monologuing/self examination scenes for my jaded tastes. Overall, a solid listen.

Story
Romance can be a little complicated when you get sucked into a wormhole. Just ask high school English teacher June Flint. One little solar flare happens and suddenly you find yourself 85 years in the future. Eighty-five years from your dream job. Your ailing mother whose only companion in this world is you. Your favorite stuffed-crust pizza from DeLucia’s on Sunday nights. But when June’s cell phone inexplicably picks up a signal, she’s able to call back to the present—more specifically, four weeks before she accidentally time traveled.

Galva—Galvicha to her three brothers, two of whom the goblins will kill—has defied her family’s wishes and joined the army’s untested new unit, the Raven Knights. They march toward a once-beautiful city overrun by the goblin horde, accompanied by scores of giant war corvids. Made with the darkest magics, these fearsome black birds may hold the key to stopping the goblins in their war to make cattle of mankind.

I love this book so much. Galva the best of kind, of warriors, of lovers. The story delivers all that I could want in a telling of the horror and thrill of battle, of the heartbreak of betrayal, and of the consequence of choices. The author doesn't waste characters and even those who make but a brief appearance on the pages leave a mark of importance. And the corvids... I'll never look at or hear the call of another raven without thinking of them. I look forward to the next book. Please.

Wren and Shane
Reviewed: 06-13-24
Of all the Paladins so far, Shane and Wren are now my favorites. They are so well written, multifaceted, as are all ofthe characters. This story offers twists that I didn't see coming, and fills in more of the overall background of the Paladins of the gods of this world, and what has shaped them into who they are. The love story is the author's usual combination of sexy poignant complex and hot. Can't wait for the next one.

Great Premise, Story and Characters
Reviewed: 04-11-24
Refreshing take on a knight errant tale. Sir Hereward is a very human hero, frequently attempting and mostly succeeding at feats of superhuman prowess, bravery and daring that push his body and skills to the limit. Mr. Fitz defies conventional fantasy tropes and and has become one of my all-time favorites mages. The stories contain just the right tone to edge up to the border of parody, but not cross over, (although Rosie made me laugh when she was discovered, and the knife that comes back to...--don't want to spoil) All in service to the safety of the world, no less.

Story
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

Stellar narration. Memorable characters, including the circus itself. The plot rambled a bit more than I usually like, but paid off nicely. I found the end less than satisfying for my tastes. The true beauty of this work is in the descriptions of what's to be found in the circus. Imaginative and perfectly described.

The narration fit the cadence and setting of the story perfectly for me. As someone who only speaks English, I truly enjoy the richness lent to the language by the accent of a fluent multi-lingual speaker. The narrator has a fine vocal range and played each character distinctly and well.
Naomi Novik has won my heart with this story. Her precise descriptions let me see, hear, taste and smell the elements of her story. Her characters are so multifaceted. She takes over-used tropes (the royals, the witch, the wizard, the peasants) and writes actual humanity into them. I love most that she doesn't shy away from keeping her truly "alien" beings strange and more than a little unknowable, instead of making everyone just a different kind of human. At the heart of her story, all creatures, no matter how different, deserve an honest attempt at respectful understanding and the chance to exist in peace.
Well done.
