Story
Victorian adventuress Veronica Speedwell is whisked off to a remote island off the tip of Cornwall when her natural historian colleague Stoker's brother calls in a favor. On the pretext of wanting a companion to accompany him to Lord Malcolm Romilly's house party, Tiberius persuades Veronica to pose as his fiancée. But upon arriving, it becomes clear that the party is not as innocent as it had seemed. Every invited guest has a connection to Romilly's wife, Rosamund, who disappeared on her wedding day three years ago, and a dramatic dinner proves she is very much on her husband's mind.

While I cannot say that Liz Cheney and I agree on many issues - I unequivocally agree with her that the democracy of the US must be preserved against all enemies - foreign and domestic. The lies and support of the lies related to the 2020 election are unAmerican. You cannot say you support the US Constitution and in the same breath say you support Donald Trump.

Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate.

Just ok

From the reviews, I very much expected this to be darkly humorous and fun. I did not really find any humor at all. It was an ok story about several people attending a school where they attended classes to plot and execute the perfect murder. I just wanted to like this so much more than I did.

There is a narrator change with this book. Contrary to other reviewers, I found her tone pleasant, the characters distinguishable, and while her voice is clearly older, I didn't think it was too old - I think it added to the characters all becoming more distinguished and experienced. As to the story - I liked it but I didn't love it. To me it was just a bit to contrived. I did like how the characters progressed and somewhat resolved their relationships.

Trust is a delicate thing, and no one knows that better than Rosalind Thorne. Lady Melbourne has entrusted her with recovering a packet of highly sensitive private letters stolen from her desk. The contents of these letters hold great interest for the famous poet Lord Byron, who had carried on a notorious public affair with Lady Melbourne's daughter-in-law, the inconveniently unstable Lady Caroline Lamb. Rosalind is to take up residence in Melbourne House, posing as Lady Melbourne's confidential secretary. There, she must discover the thief and regain possession of the letters.

Now, in Miss Julia Takes Over, with her sharp tongue and iron backbone intact, Miss Julia must tackle another disruption when Hazel Marie doesn't return from a dinner date. Miss Julia hires J. D. Pickens to investigate, despite her reservations about his taste for beer and women.

This is book 2 of this series but is a standalone story. The core characters from the first book return with several new ones thrown in to help Miss Julia on her new adventure. Miss Julia is a character of a bygone era trying to navigate through modern times, while imposing her own standards on those around her - and frequently they are better for it. Julia evolves as a character as she interacts with the world around her which provides interest and humor to the story. Overall, very enjoyable.

Their background in sleuthing comes from the television shows they watch and the books they read. An enjoyable start to a series.

Unbelievable how Fox/Murdoch family knowingly lied and indoctrinated their viewers to believe anything they said for ratings and money. Fox ran the network (and still do) as if it was pure entertainment - viewers don't like the truth, let's create another reality they like better for ratings. Very sad the exploitation of America and the gullibility of Fox viewers. Well researched and should be heard by all Americans.
