Remy Wadia left India for the United States long ago, carrying his resentment of his mother with him. He has now returned to Bombay to adopt a baby from a young pregnant girl—and to see his elderly mother for the first time in several years. I loved this story...until I didn't...
Reviewed: 11-24-23
Thrity Umrigar has been one of my favorite authors...until this book. Her stories stay with me, the countries, the people, all so complex and interesting. I was really enjoying the story in this book, the plot, the characters, were all so interesting like her previous books. But, then, she had to go political. In the middle of an interesting story, she interjects her dislike for Trump's "Make America Great Again" and make known of her swooning love of Barak O. It added NOTHING to the story. She had a platform and she chose to use it. There was absolutely no reason to do this. I stopped reading and will return the book and will not read this author again. I wasn't here to learn of her politics; I was here to be entertained by her gift of writing stories. It does make me sad.

So much honesty and insight.
Reviewed: 10-16-23
I'm surprised there aren't more reviews here. Nadia is very generous in sharing her story with readers. Every adult, young and old, needs to read this book because they will most likely resonate with one or more of her stories. Even if you don't resonate with the level and depth of her story (because she has many tragic tales to share) you will resonate on some level. There were a few times when I asked myself why she did what she did but we have to remember that our mind is a powerful thing and it can be hard to understand why our brain works the way it does, especially with such immense trauma.
Honestly, if I had known that Nadia and her husband were powerful Democrats from California I wouldn't have purchased this book. I'm really glad I didn't know because she never makes this a platform for Democrats and I would have missed out on a powerful story otherwise.
Nadia's story is moving, heartbreaking, insightful and at times difficult to hear. But we must hear her story in order to attempt to make a difference somehow.

Story
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

Heartbreakingly Beautiful....

Both the story and the narration. As someone who has lost a parent to cancer, I related word-for-word in her description of her mother's battle and ultimate death. How difficult it must have been for Michelle to have written, and then read, this story.
Michelle's voice is so beautiful. I kept thinking it sounded familiar and then I remembered who she reminded me of...Mary Karr. Both of their voices are so poetic and beautiful. This is a wonderful story told from the heart.

Initially, I had trouble staying with this book. I would stop listening, listen to another book, and then return to this one. However, half way through I was hooked and then I couldn't stop listen. I loved the ending. I totally did not see it coming. The story, the narrator, all great!

Story
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

This is an inspiring story about the author (and her boyfriend) and their goal of turning their passions into their careers. A must read for anyone that has read Bex's first book, A Happier Hour, and a must read for anyone who needs motivation and encouragement to follow their dreams. Absolutely loved listening to the author narrate the book.

Story
When Rebecca Weller’s pounding, dehydrated head woke her at 3:00 am, yet again, she stared at the ceiling, wondering why the hell she kept doing this to herself. At 39 years of age - and a health coach, no less - she knew better than to down several bottles of wine per week. Her increasingly dysfunctional relationship with alcohol had to stop, but after decades of social drinking, she was terrified of what that might mean. How could she live a joyful existence, without alcohol? How would she relax, socialize, or celebrate - without wine?

I literally devoured this book. The story is very well told and definitely causes the reader to consider their own story. I am so glad I purchased the Audible version of the book because it was a delight to listen to the author narrate; her voice (absolutely love her accent) is so soothing and genuine. A Happier Hour was even more meaningful after reading the author's second book, Up All Day.

Story
Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

Story
On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual false alarm. As one fireman recounted later, “Once that first stack got going, it was good-bye, Charlie.” The fire was disastrous: It reached 2,000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed 400,000 books and damaged 700,000 more.

I don't think I could have continued listening to this book if I had not known the ending. What they went through was tough. Incredibly tough. But they persevered and their story is motivational and encouraging to new businesses.
I hate to go political but I couldn't help but be reminded of a previous president who made the remark to businesses that "if you've got a business, you didn't build that." The guy's at Nike built Nike. Their lives and futures were on the line. They built it. And, in the process they created a lot of jobs. After reading the book, I was so very impressed by their hard work and the end results.
Whether you are building a business or just need motivation for your personal life, buy this book and soak up the wisdom.
