Story
When Pamela Druckerman turns 40, waiters start calling her "Madame", and she detects a disturbing new message in mens" gazes: I would sleep with her, but only if doing so required no effort whatsoever. Yet 40 isn"t even technically middle-aged anymore. And after a lifetime of being clueless, Druckerman can finally grasp the subtext of conversations, maintain (somewhat) healthy relationships and spot narcissists before they ruin her life. What are the modern 40s, and what do we know once we reach them? What makes someone a "grown-up" anyway?

Honest and entertaining

Great follow up to other book. Sometimes the hard truth can make you laugh out aloud, grimace or cry. Pamela brings the truth to her experience of navigating in her 40’s both as an American and one living in France. This book was enjoyable and I recommend it.

Story
In January 2019, culture writer Anne Helen Petersen set the internet on fire with her viral BuzzFeed essay diagnosing “millennial burnout” - a chronic state of stress and exhaustion that’s become a “base temperature” for young people today. Now, she continues this generation-defining conversation in a brand-new format, interviewing millennials around the country about their own deeply personal experiences with burnout, and the culture that creates it.

Mostly interviews

Didn’t love this one. It was mostly millennials being interviewed and discussing their feelings. I felt like I was listening to their therapy session when I was hoping someone would say back to them “have you thought about history or how things are outside of yourselves?”.

Jen Lancaster is here to take a hard look at our elevating anxieties, and with self-deprecating wit and levelheaded wisdom, she charts a path out of the quagmire that keeps us frightened of the future and ashamed of our imperfectly perfect human lives. Take a deep breath, and her advice, and you just might get through a holiday dinner without wanting to disown your uncle.

I was hoping for more

Definitely laughed out aloud a bunch of times but for some reason I felt I didn’t get as much meaning to this theory/story as I was hoping for. The author certainly has done some research but I was just hoping for more results than theories. It’s certainly entertaining. Just want my favorite.

Lots of insight and humor from the author. Lots of heart behind it too. If you’re a fan of Jen Mann, or a woman going through mid life, you’ll love this book.
