Terry Crews has given us a well written memoir of redemption, understanding and growth. I found it moving and insightful.

Great idea and good plot. But the characters chew over every action before actually doing anything. I managed to finish only through frequent use of the "forward 20 seconds" button. Excellent narration.

Too many battles. No women to speak of. Cute idea but not a lot of depth.

Well written, concise, clear. Filled in a lot of holes I had about causes of WWII.

Reads like a TV script. The writing is clear and concise but uninspired. One predictable trope after another. The reader is excellent.

This story had great potential, but ended up with too much telling and not enough showing. Misses being either great fantasy or great interpersonal fiction. I finally gave up.

There is a line between dull and over-dramatized. This performance was well into the latter. The French accent and high drama made me uncomfortable and I was not able to finish it.

When I was in ninth grade I had the world's dryest history teacher. Turned me off to history for over 30 years. This book brings that time back to me. No heart. The people are automatons, and the point of view is at 10,000 very impersonal feet. What a shame, for this history is fascinating.

I love everything by Kate Atkinson. Her attention to detail and the inner workings of multiple characters. In this case, Jason Isaacs, the narrator elevates the book to new heights. He puts lots of feeling and color into the performance. He does great accents and different voices. But he manages to sound like he's "just reading". I like to be read to, not "acted at". And Mr Isaacs is spot on. (oh, I just looked him up and he's Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies -- no wonder -- duh!)

Not the most scintillating writing or ideas, but a good enough story to finish. Casting the boy as a “gee willikers” 1950s Jimmy Olsen type was especially annoying, but the characters were still sympathetic.
