Story
It’s Drop Night, the one night every decade when the gods hand out cards to a lucky few. If you get a deck, you’re a deckbearer capable of wondrous feats within the Great Game system. You can control powerful monsters and summon mantles that let you fight alongside your beasts. Ethan Wolfe, top enforcer for the Grimm family mob, has already been overlooked on two previous Drop Nights. People of his ilk seldom receive cards, as the gods tend to favor people who follow their divine mandates, but that doesn’t mean Wolfe can’t hope.

the edgiest of edge lords wages war against the crime lords of New Deck City. solid action and good pacing. my only complaint is that the cards seem like more of an after thought. content warning lots of brutal violence, conversations of SA, drug usage.

Sorry... Really? Thrust? Anyway, Danny Kendrick was a down-on-his luck performer who always struggled to find his place. He certainly never wanted to be a hero. He just hoped to earn a living doing what he loved. That all changes when he pisses off the wrong guy and gets sucked into a fantasy realm straight out of a Renaissance Fair. Getting used to a new world is tough. It's even tougher when you're surrounded by axe-wielding barbarians, super hot elf assassins, strange magic, and a jaded System that doesn't appear interested in being charged with yet another companion.

fairly good if you can get past the MC
Reviewed: 12-05-24
great humor, good pacing, fun performances but honestly the MC being a whiny loser for 95% of the story is a drag. when he accepts his place in the story and gets to it the book is 100% better. also the self congratulations the writers give themselves for cribbing from Tolkien is a little irritating but not enough to ruin the story. definitely give it a listen.

not a bad story but the invulnerable ultra cool Mary Sue MC got boring. there was never a problem he couldn't beat and the fun aspects of his character didn't show through till the last adventure in the book. a character needs flaws and "I'm too F***ing awesome" doesn't count.

Following the guidance of a mysterious blue prompt, Sylas journeys to the town of Ember Hollow to breathe new life into a quaint local pub. Along the way, he meets a clever apothecary named Mira, who helps him acclimate to the ins and outs of the realm, and Patches, a corpulent cat who’s slightly . . . shall we say, unusual. Dubbing the pub “The Old Lamplighter,” Sylas hopes it will be a safe haven for other weary souls. Of course, it doesn’t feel that safe when the prompt reappears with a warning: [You have 89 days until the invasion.]

a fun story with a good protagonist
Reviewed: 09-19-24
the story was good and had a satisfying conclusion but I don't know if the character dieing was necessary. the setting didn't change significantly from his previous life he could have just been a soldier retiring to run a pub. the setting wasn't used to its fullest potential. and I wish writers would trust in the slice of life aspect rather than shoehorning in some mysterious looming end of the world stakes. but overall fun characters and good story telling.

the narrative jumped from character to character so much you never had time to care what happened to any of them. it was a whole book of ok what's going to happen then nothing did.
the idea of second generation isikai was interesting but abandoned almost immediately if it was ever the intent at all. also some kind of grossly outdate conservative ideas buried in the prose.

each change in the narrative was jarring but would get good just for another change to blind side you.

It took three episodes before the Incel harem crap started. that's three of the 25 minutes long episodes. most of which have midshow ads and up to 15 minutes of dead air. at some point it gives up on action and adventure and becomes strait up porn. porn written by someone who has never talked to a woman. hell it even has a Lolita wolf girl Ninja. might as well call it Weeb bait.

for starters I will say it takes a good writer to make an over powered character and time travel work. Jake's character and humor make this an enjoyable trilogy but there are some flaws addressing criticisms in the narrative doesn't dismiss them it draws attention to them. and making the stand in for fans monstrous spiders is not flattering. Jake learning a lesson then immediately forgetting it got tedious and him just casually winning every time was a little anticlimactic. also the have your cake and eat it to makes the lessons he learned meaningless.that said a great serioes especially for a first time author
