Story
Irina obsessively takes explicit photographs of the average-looking men she persuades to model for her, scouted from the streets of Newcastle. Placed on sabbatical from her dead-end bar job, she is offered an exhibition at a fashionable London gallery, promising to revive her career in the art world and offering an escape from her rut of drugs, alcohol and extreme cinema. The news triggers a self-destructive tailspin, centred around Irina"s relationship with her obsessive best friend and a shy young man from her local supermarket who has attracted her attention....

Excellent narration of a complicated character
Reviewed: 10-12-24
Loved the narration - it captured exactly how unengaged, yet engaging, the main character could be. The tone throughout kept my interest and compassion in place while not requiring approval of the main character. Irina felt familiar in the way that someone you know to be manipulative, and possibly destructive, can still be someone you feel needs sympathy and looking after. There was violence in all its forms in this book, but the title and summary give you fair warning.

Story
Annie Bot was created to be the perfect girlfriend for her human owner Doug. Designed to satisfy his emotional and physical needs, she has dinner ready for him every night, wears the pert outfits he orders for her, and adjusts her libido to suit his moods. True, she’s not the greatest at keeping Doug’s place spotless, but she’s trying to please him. She’s trying hard.

There is much more to this book than I anticipated. The main character had me examining, and then reexamining, their choices and circumstances from the perspective of both a Bot and a human. This made for an interesting and illuminating read that stayed with me after the book was finished.

And every hired gun in Kansas is out to collect the bounty on her head, including bonafide witch hunter Old Tom and his mysterious, mute ward Rabbit. On the road to Burden County, they’re joined by two vagabond cowboys with a strong sense of adventure–but no sense of purpose–and a recently widowed schoolteacher with nothing left to lose. And as their posse grows, so too does the danger.

There was lots of ground covered.. it was a supernatural western adventure told by an excellent narrator with a couple of musical numbers presented at perfectly appropriate times. All in all, a wonderful listen

Amina al-Sirafi should be content. After a storied and scandalous career as one of the Indian Ocean’s most notorious pirates, she’s survived backstabbing rogues, vengeful merchant princes, several husbands, and one actual demon to retire peacefully with her family to a life of piety, motherhood, and absolutely nothing that hints of the supernatural.

Competency celebrated
Reviewed: 05-15-24
Plenty of action & adventure, some lust, some magic, and many interesting, diverse characters - What"s not to love? I particularly appreciated the narrator. They portrayed the irritation, ambivalence, and other very relatable and appropriate reactions in a distinctive voice. The characters had individual and interesting attributes and their skills, competence, and frailties were celebrated. It was refreshing that physical beauty was mostly irrelevant and mentioned only as needed. Extremely enjoyable listen.

I enjoy when an author or other creative person explores a different vibe. I am a big fan of everything Mr. Kane has put out so far, and this darker, less comical, version of heroic, chaotic, flawed characters was no exception. I look forward to following every old or new avenue this author takes.

Story
They say bad things happen in threes. The first was when I lost my parents. The second came when I had to leave behind everything I knew to move across the world to live with my only remaining relative. But what was life for, if not for living? So I kept moving. Then the third thing happened, just as I was about to begin my junior year at the prestigious Blackstone University. I caught the eye of not one, not two, but three of the most infamous guys on campus. The three guys from the wrong side of the tracks.

Extremely hard pass
Reviewed: 05-16-23
This book had a very creepy vibe. The "Kings" (yeah, right) were wanted by all women, feared by all men (of course), and all 3 of their voices were predictably slow and raspy (emo mixed with angsty). The one woman they identified as the most valuable was not local (you know; "she goes to another school") and all other women were judged as less-than...of course the chosen woman also found them irresistible. No - just no. I stopped listening with less than 1/2 an hour left to go because I couldn"t see a world where this dated, stereotypical book could be redeemed and I was just rage-listening.

Main character has no character
Reviewed: 03-21-23
I"m within 2 hours of the end and am returning this book because I just can"t follow the main character any more. No spoilers, but the protagonist accepts all the benefits of his inner older self as he time travels without taking on any of the interesting moral questions of how his younger outer self should express them. He never even asks the questions and thus becomes a thief, usurper, and creep fulfilling a quest without ever having considered how he has taken advantage of the circumstances, gifts, and people around him to fulfill that quest. A quest, which by the way, could destroy the world....but he REALLY wants to do it so, whatever. The science and math portions are sometimes interesting and the narrator is good.
