Why 4 stars for story
Reviewed: 04-05-24
I think this series is top notch and reader Gildart Jackson is one of the best. However, this book frustrated me when characters went in directions that weren’t logical to me. I found myself repeating “Really??” But Mr Gallagher IS the successful author, so who am I to criticize? I still look forward to the next book.

Story
The ancient curse of Carnaby Castle has begun taking victims again—either that, or someone’s very cleverly done away with the new young bride of the philandering family patriarch, and the chief suspect is none other than Carnaby, London’s finest club steward. Anty Boisjoly’s wits and witticisms are tested to their frozen limit as he sifts the superstitions, suspicions, and age-old schisms of the mediaeval Peak District village of Hoy to sort out how it was done before Carnaby’s served his last scotch-and-soda.

Perfection!

Antsy is a clever but totally irritating chap to the Inspector. The humor causes me to chuckle out loud. May Vickers live forever and surely Buns followed Antsy to London. No one solves a locked door murder like Antsy Boisjoly.

Story
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Story
When children Josh and Dilys find a body in the woods on the outskirts of their small Cotswold village, they are too terrified to report it. But when, as adults, Josh discovers that his sister has kept a memento - the victim's charm bracelet - he feels compelled to share the secret. When Josh unburdens himself to retired superintendent Alan Markby, his instincts tell him that this is linked to a missing person, a case long grown cold. The missing girl was last seen in the region currently under the jurisdiction of Superintendent Ian Carter and Inspector Jess Campbell.

I missed Judith Boyd!
Reviewed: 01-20-24
With this new narrator, Jilly Bond, gone was Jess’ brogue and Ian’s posh speech. It changed the character’s identity. Very disappointing. I see that the last book in this series is also done by Ms Bond. The writing was everything that I came to expect. I just wish that it could have been performed by Ms Boyd.

Story
In this, the fourth installment of the Doyle and Acton mystery series, Detective Sergeant Doyle realizes that several apparently unrelated murders are actually "containment" murders - murders to contain an ominous scandal that could reach into the highest levels of Scotland Yard's CID. In the process of tracking down the killers, however, she comes to the unsettling conclusion that Chief Inspector Acton has committed a containment murder or two of his own.

Story good, but new narrator was distracting. The voices of Acton and Williams too similar; Doyle lacked the natural Irish note of teasing. Disappointed, but I do love this series.
