Can you hate someone so much? Yes!
Reviewed: 01-07-25
This was such a fun book to read! Well, now that I’ve finished! Oh my how I hated that man!
I always wondered it it was possible to hate someone so much! I felt in a cage shouting at people don’t go there! Don’t do that! It was wild!
Modglin’s novels always get me thinking, and this one is no exception. So here it goes: what is wrong with us that we can’t let go? What’s with the need to punish? But above all: For how long and up to what extents are we willing to go to get justice?
I loved the concept and I found close to that couple, struggling, having second thoughts and mostly trying their best for the love they once had.
One more to Kiersten Modglin!

This is my first book of 2025 and I picked it because Freida is always a good idea!
I have a thing for sociopaths and psychopaths and it’s fascinating to learn about them even in fiction.
Human mind is certainly fascinating and what I loved about this story is how we see what we want to see. Even with overwhelming evidence of facts, we are capable of denying it all.
Moreover, we are capable of turning the blind eye and move on with our lives even knowing that we are protecting someone who committed heinous crimes.
Is this human nature? I wonder what I would do.
Superb story!

Story
Newlywed Jade Westmore has finally found her forever in husband Wells, a charming, successful, and recently divorced architect—only there’s one caveat: behind the gates of their elysian estate, hidden from street view in the caretaker’s cottage … lives Wells’s first wife, Sylvie. Three years ago, the original Mrs. Westmore suffered a nervous breakdown—and hasn’t uttered a sound since. Not a physician, psychologist, or world-renown specialist has been able to elicit so much as a word from the silent woman … until now.

The Silent Woman by Minka Kent
Jade married Wells, the grandson of a legend who passed away but left a great legacy. Unfortunately, this is Wells seconds marriage as Sylvie had a terrible accident and is confined to a life surrounded by caregivers.
Jade will try her best to feel comfortable in the vast property and she will stay away from Sylvie as her loving husband requested. Jade is a kind soul who feels sorry for the lost love Wells and Sylvie had.
While writing her story she will meet Mary Claire, Vieviette’s daughter who will describe her as an uncaring mother or caring in her terms.
How difficult to carry the cross of your own mother wishing you were a boy. How awful knowing that your mother always put herself first. “She fell in love with an Argentinian man who worked as an onset dance coordinators for one of her musicals”
She could have been happy, but again she chose herself. Viviette was a legend and legends requiere commitment and being absolutely focused.
Now, Jade wants to make the most of it and even becomes friends with her neighbor, Portia. It’s good to have someone to commiserate! But what will happen when these two women start putting together a puzzle they didn’t even know it existed? Will anyone believe them?
Kent plays a wonderful card in this story and what I love the most is her capacity to turn things around and make it meaningful to the reader beyond the thrill of the plot twist.
I am grateful for all the silenced women around the globe.

This is definitely one of the funniest, in the good way, I’ve read from McFadden!
She builds up all the tension around something that end up being a complete and utter diversion! Her writing is flawless and I enjoyed every twist and turn.
It is my belief that when one is reading a thriller and is able to giggle, the author, really got to the reader. Is that dark relationship that is built where one becomes part of the story and feels it!
I loved this one. This book found its reader!

Power, silence, guilt and so many lies.
Reviewed: 12-06-24
This is my first approach to this author and I deeply enjoyed Society of Lies!
It has been said that many things have changed in terms of opportunities for those who did not belong to the elite. However, even when this is a work of fiction, we have a glimpse of the privileged and their ways of moving through life.
Being a professor myself, I found the scene of the paid essay writing disgusting. It is done everywhere. Unfortunately, those who take the money and those who write those essays are never the privileged ones.
I treasured the words from the author, as they provided light, truth and a warm feeling. By choosing to walk us through her experience she gave the readers a look into what is behind those walls and how things seem to have changed for better.
Finally, I would like to say that I found Maya and Naomi really close to my heart as relationships with our family members are always tough. They were real and transmitted feelings close and dear to every human being.
It has been a wonderful reading!

What are we supposed to be afraid of? A wild journey into a scary era.
Reviewed: 12-02-24
This is my first approach to Clay McLeod Chapman’s writing and I am speechless. It has been a long time ever since I’ve devoured a book in one sitting. Superb!
This novel transported me to an era in which everything was something to be afraid of. To a time in our short existence where we had to be afraid, where we were vulnerable and where our elders - wether it was parents, teachers or caretakers - had a lot of influence on our lives.
There were some many things that were accepted as Gospel word and now looking back, that was the scary part. Not being able to question, not being able to even distinguish sand from water. A lot of things were done in the name of protecting the innocent. Some of them, absolutely heinous.
This novel captures the very essence of that era, not so long ago and it presents us with a character who tries over and over to do the right thing. We are introduced to someone who is not proud of his deeds, someone who has strong difficulties to connect with himself.
This is the story of so many of us and behind that character are all our true fears and our true selves. After all, what happens when you find out that those who were there to protect you are the very same you can’t trust.

The Book of Witching by C J Cooke
This is my first approach to Cooke’s writing and I found it fascinating, especially for the extensive research conducted.
I must say The Book of Witching was no surprise to me. I expected everything that took place in the story. By no means I am stating that the books is not fascinating neither an amazing novel. What I am trying to state humbly is that women were burned, tortured and killed in the most inhumane manners throughout history.
So much was done in the name of God! So much was done by man who wanted power, who were bewitched not by women but by power itself. This book is one more proof of my statement.
I want to thank @cjcooke_author for gifting us with her talent and impeccable wiring! It has been a tremendous experience for me being a Christian to read this book. However, we may not deny neither look the other way as this is a such important part of women’s history.
Do yourself a favor and go for The Book of Witching!

Jaw dropping beginning to end!
This is my fourth approach to Torre’s writing and she never ceases to amaze me. She has the ability to transform a pristine and gorgeous setting into the most heinous and bloody mess you’ll ever find.
Moving on to character, they were so skillfully developed, so meticulously crafted that was a pleasure to experience them. To flow with each of them on a path that was set from the very first chapter.
I have to give Torre extra credit for dealing with such sensitive topic! I was bold! To have your readers hooked from the beginning knowing what this evil lady is planning, that was simply wow!
Even when there are lots of hints for us thriller lovers, the novel flowed and was so beautifully written!
I can’t say I expected that plot twist neither that encounter but it felt so good giving them at least the chance to talk.
After all, we should never underestimate father’s love.
