Story
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Eunsun Kim was born in North Korea, one of the most secretive and oppressive countries in the modern world. As a child, Eunsun loved her country...despite her school field trips to public executions, daily self-criticism sessions, and the increasing gnaw of hunger as the countrywide famine escalated. By the time she was 11 years old, Eunsun's father and grandparents had died of starvation, and Eunsun too was in danger of starving. Finally her mother decided to escape North Korea with Eunsun and her sister.

As a child during the Reagan administration this book helps to put a lot of historical dates and facts into perspective, and gives me greater understanding of who President Ronald Reagan
and his wife Nancy Reagan were. I've always been a fan but now I am an even bigger fan.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. I am a huge fan of true stories. This book was captivating and gave me a new understanding of what it must've been like. Towards the end of the book I got a little choked up I must admit. This will have to go down as one of my all-time favorite stories. I wonder if the movie is as good… Usually not.

I would have never thought that someone who grew up in such a hostile environment and such deep rooted Muslim religious beliefs could ever soften his heart towards God Almighty the creator of the universe. It just goes to show that God can use the most unlikely people to reach anyone including a person who grew up in a family like this guy did.
