Too heavy handed for me
Reviewed: 05-01-23
I don"t like leaving bad reviews,
but this book was a struggle for me.
Too much was told and not shown,
the use of "fate" and "meant to be" for insta-love, and not enough time travel.
The narrator was fine, but the plot less so (for me).
p.s. Also, the fact that both names end with the sound made it confusing sometimes.

Nothing good ever comes from drinking a box of wine alone. So when I decided to entertain my drunken self by setting up some hand-me-down podcasting equipment and reading the steamy parts from romance novels, I never thought anyone would actually listen. The fact that I admitted my huge crush on my sexy next door neighbor made the whole thing even more mortifying. But sometimes life surprises you, and that’s how my podcast, Heidi’s Discount Erotica, was born. Now I, Heidi Larsen, a sweet former kindergarten teacher in Waconia, Minnesota, lead a scandalous double life.

If you want an adorable and funny story, with some erotica sprinkled in, I recommend you give this one a chance :)
It is short and sweet, without any shocking twists or any such.
And the performance is great, as to be expected from this narrator :)

I liked many of the themes in the book, especialy from the first half. And it was relatively a fluent amd easy listen. But, and here Im going to be a bit spoilerish -
after a point it became.. inconsequential, felt like one event chased the other with no real reason. And I guessed pretty early how it would end, or atleast what woukd happen. And the contemporary pop culture refs were a bit unbelievable in futuristic sci-fi. It hurts the suspension of disbelief.
Anyhow, þhe oerformsnce was good :)

cute story, centered around the gap of cultures

This is an enjoyable light listen.
The narrator did an overall good job with conveying emotions and mostly differentiating between the different characters.
The story has some creative ideas, but some parts made me eyeroll (for example, when someone talks out loud about there emotions when theyre alone).
Also, there are many questions that were left unanswered (like what are actually the differences between humans and elves. Because although it wasnt stated, apperently there isnt that much of a different lufe span if at all). And one of the nain obstacles that were stated in the very beginning of the book was ignord as non issue (what society thought of a coupling of a human and an elf).
The romance was cute, somewhat naive in its aproach. No steaminess, simply romance.
tl;dr some parts didnt feelas believable, but it was still a cute and fun story.

Story
What if anything you wrote became true? When an angry dwarf at a traveling carnival promises Roger something that could change his life, he never thought it would come in the form of a magic pen. Now, anything the introverted college student writes becomes true, and with its power, he"ll finally be able to take revenge on the bullies who have tormented him. There"s just one problem. A group of assassins will do anything to get the pen, he accidentally made a entire squad of dancers into slaves, and his best friend somehow got an all-powerful mech. Maybe that"s three problems....

I didnt really like the book, it was ok-ish.
First of all - the powers were a bit too mind-control-y for my taste.
The erotic parts werent that sexy or intriguing. (They werent a complete downer, but didnt do it for me).
sexy times aside - the plot didnt fulfill its potential.
The ability of the pen was too powerful, and in no point did it feel like the m.c did anything to deserve it, or used it in an interesting way. moreover the m.c. was way too mundane, and acted stupidly.
There were some good bits, I enjoyed some of it. But atleast for me it was a disapointment.
The voice acting was alright.
If you liked this book, or found the concept interesting, I would recommend listening to "good intentions".

let me start by saying that I like rpg, playing d&d regularly and a read quite a few litRPG.
The good parts in this book:
has funny moments, unique lead, and has some "bigger picture" forshadowing. Also, the narration is good.
The parts I had problem with:
First, its treatment of women is.. problematic.
I dont need every book I read to be a shining beacon of feminine prowess, but when there was a line (about fiends, but still) "males tend to be more intelligent, while female are more ferocious" it rubs me the wrong way.
second, it has a hard time showing without telling. an emotion or action resonent much more clearly if we dont immidiately get a detailed explenation "she was happy because..".
Thirdly, I didnt connect to any of the characters. It isnt a must, but it helps any book/media of story telling.
I had a few other problems, but those above are my main ones.
tl;dr - had funny parts and it own uniqueness, but lack of empathy, demeaning action towards women, and some story telling elements prevented this book to reach its potential

Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life - and she"s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow Series when they were just kids; it"s what got them through their mother leaving. Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere. Cath"s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can"t let go.
