Story
T. R. Fehrenbach brilliantly delineates the contrasts and conflicts between the many Mexicos, unraveling the history while weaving a fascinating tapestry of beauty and brutality: the Amerindians, who wrought from the vulnerable land a great indigenous Meso-American civilization by the first millennium BC; the successive reigns of Olmec, Maya, Toltec, and Mexic masters, who ruled through an admirably efficient bureaucracy and the power of the priests, propitiating the capricious gods with human sacrifices; the Spanish conquistadors, and much more.

I've read or listened to 3 of Fehrenbachs history books. They are long but only due to the depth he dives. He was a true history genius. If you want to understand why Mexico is the way it is today, this is a must read

Story
Topanga Canyon is home to two couples on a collision course. Los Angeles liberals Delaney and Kyra Mossbacker lead an ordered, sushi-and-recycling existence in a newly gated hilltop community: He is a sensitive nature writer, she an obsessive realtor. Mexican illegals Candido and America Rincon desperately cling to their vision of the American Dream as they fight off starvation in a makeshift camp deep in the ravine.

The Tortilla Curtin shows that over the past 30 plus years zero progress has been made on the struggles Californians and others face yearl. Immigration, crime, wildfires etc. Change a few things like adding cell ubiquitous phones I stead of new tech and you have Topanga Canyon 2022. History is always our best tutor but we seem to never embrace its lessons.

Story
The United States emerged from the American Revolution still engaged in old world politics. In particular, America faced all the trade restrictions of the British Navigation Acts. As a result, The United States declared war on Great Britain in 1812, and proceeded to invade Canada, one of Britain's possessions, an invasion which failed. At a cost of $80 million in national debt and of a single party assuming almost unchallenged power, the War of 1812 has been called "America's most unpopular war".

Jeff does a great job in the telling of the US war with Mexico in the early 1900s. I felt it unbiased and well researched. Spotlights some of America's and Mexico's greatest soldiers; Pancho Villa, Pershing and Patton.

Story
Philosophers have long puzzled over the nature of space, time, and matter. These inquiries led to the flowering of physics with the Scientific Revolution in the 17th century. Since then, the spectacular success of modern physics might appear to have made philosophy irrelevant. But new theories have created a new range of philosophical concerns: What is the shape of space? Is time travel possible? Is there a grand unified theory that unites all of physics?

Without a background in physics nor philosophy, there was a lot that I didn't quite grasp and, being an audio book, it's not easy to review. However, he takes two highly complicated subjects, brings them together and does it as simply as possible.
The final chapter hits on the perfect universe in which we live and that bears witness to a higher power, a creator, God the Father. There really is no other explanation.

Dereliction of Duty is a stunning analysis of how and why the United States became involved in an all-out and disastrous war in Southeast Asia. Fully and convincingly researched, based on transcripts and personal accounts of crucial meetings, confrontations, and decisions, it is the only book that fully re-creates what happened and why. McMaster pinpoints the policies and decisions that got the United States into the morass and reveals who made these decisions and the motives behind them, disproving the published theories of other historians and excuses of the participants.

While training to become an Armed Forces officer, it is stressed that history will repeat itself unless we have learned what mistakes we should not duplicate. Even though this book is only about the Vietnam conflict, HR McMaster lays out a historical blueprint of the United States problems during all conflicts since WWII. He is highly intelligent, thorough and articulate. This is a must read for anyone wanting to know how our conflicts are managed by our Presidents and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Now he needs to lay out the truths behind Afghanistan and Iraq.
