Story
Ezra Barker is a traitor. When the Merg invaded Earth, he didn’t fight or even hide. He cooperated, helping them as they seized control of the planet and began their pillaging of its resources. While others toil away in mines and quarries, Ezra works an office job, helping his boss, The Senator, rule over the swath of territory given to her by the Merg. Sergeant Hayes is a brutal enforcer of the Merg’s rules. As an officer in the Health and Safety Department, he follows Merg orders, arresting, interrogating, and executing at their command.

This book was a real mind trip that put politics, human nature, and existential threats into one complete package. The twists you would have expected are not the ones that happened, but overall the whole book was poignant and darkly fun.

Honestly a Bit Traumatizing
Reviewed: 04-18-24
What I wanted was a fun little Paris chocolate story with an interesting cast of characters. I wanted something light and fairly meaningless. What I got was actual flashbacks to my time in the hospital after a serious medical event and some kind of post-coma PTSD. I was not prepared for it to talk about sensations and thoughts that only can be understood by people who have been through severe physical trauma. So, if you"ve never been through major trauma that caused you to be in a medically induced coma, this book is light and fun. If you have, this book is going to give you PTSD. I don"t know if the author went through any of that, or perhaps is close to someone who did, but I couldn"t enjoy so much of this book becauseit was too relatable.

Story
Deep in the heart of the Congo a small baby is adopted by Kala, a fierce anthropoid ape of the tribe of Kerchak. Here, protected by his savage foster mother, Tarzan (for so she named him) learned the secrets of jungle life - how to talk with all animals, how to move like a shadow, how to swing freely through the teeming forest, how to fight barehanded the great carnivores. Here he acquired the strength and agility of his guardian apes, and the same keen sense of smell and sound that all wild creatures need to protect themselves.

Plot twist!
Reviewed: 01-08-23
I disliked the beginning of this book so much that I didn"t pick it back up for months, but I am glad that I did. At the end of the prior novel, everything felt very done and like it was going to be hard to go on from there, and then this novel started with an early slog. I clearly enjoy Aaronovitch"s writing, so I knew that he could pull it off, and he really did in the end. Plus there clearly must be more after this! You can"t just leave Peter Grant where he is at the end, he has a whole life ahead of him! So, long and short of it, the reader is always amazing, the story really becomes quite fun, and I"m certain there are many more books to come, which I heartily look forward to.

Childhood Favorite Still Great
Reviewed: 01-07-23
I grew up with The Princess and The Goblin as a movie I watched regularly and loved. I was afraid that being such an old story it would have a very icky world view, but it was actually fantastic. Totally timeless, and it sounds like it was written a good century later than it was, maybe more. Still lovely, very odd but charming, and it is clear that the author told these stories first to his MANY children before writing them down and sharing them with the world. Bravo!

Story
The Latin term for the female genitalia, pudendum, means “parts for which you should be ashamed”. Until 1651, ovaries were called female testicles. The fallopian tubes are named for a man. Named, claimed, and shamed: Welcome to the story of the female body, as penned by men. Today, a new generation of (mostly) women scientists is finally redrawing the map. With modern tools and fresh perspectives, they’re looking at the organs traditionally bound up in reproduction—the uterus, ovaries, vagina—and seeing within them a new biology of change and resilience.

A must read!

If you or someone you know has a vagina, this book is a must read. ESPECIALLY if you are in healthcare. I honestly want to buy this book for every medical professional I interact with and give it to them as a gift so that they can be better at what they do. It is frustrating AND depressing at a profound level how little our bodies matter to anyone medically or scientifically. It is the best book from my list in 2022.
