OMG. Left me wondering how the US government on every level down to the county functions. Michael Lewis does a terrific job of research and analysis and weaves together a compelling and horrific tale of ineptitude and cowardice mixed with people of conviction and clarity trying to fix a broken system and a public that is often misinformed and in denial. The question that isn’t asked is, “What will the next crisis be and how will we survive it? Will we have the courage, discipline, and foresight to implement both preventive measures and solutions that we as a country and a world will inevitably confront?

This author is writing for a PhD level audience and I feel like an eighth grader. He writes a very, very deep and nuanced analysis of fascism focusing on German Nazism and Mussolini’s Italy and he also covers other fascist movements, military dictatorships, authoritarian regimes, etc. Its a very interesting subject and his exhaustive research and knowledge on the subject is incredible. The last 10 minutes of the reading are a concise and prescient definition of fascism and it is chilling to see how closely it aligns with current US political, social, and economic conditions that would be moving us toward a fascist state.

Really well researched and thought out overview of the medieval world and covers all of Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, India, China, Japan, and what is known about the Americas. Props to the narrator for his amazing ability to pronounce names, places, etc of frequently complex pronunciation. My only criticism of the book is that it seems to cut off kind of arbitrarily at the end. I would have liked to hear a final chapter or two on how the Medieval period impacted world history or the author’s closing thoughts, something that tied it all together. Still would highly recommend.
