Story
Long before she ran away with Paris to Troy, Helen of Sparta was haunted by nightmares of a burning city under siege. These dreams foretold impending war - a war that only Helen has the power to avert. To do so, she must defy her family and betray her betrothed by fleeing the palace in the dead of night. In need of protection, she finds shelter and comfort in the arms of Theseus, son of Poseidon. With Theseus at her side, she believes she can escape her destiny.

Lackluster Heroine, Whiny Narration
Reviewed: 10-11-22
I wanted to like this. I gave it a couple of tries.
First of all, I quickly tired of Helen going on and on about her beauty. There was an element of rebellion and defiance in her, but it was glossed over by the narration and the storytelling. She was a Demi-God! Give her some credit as a strong confident young woman!
The narration was whiny, seemingly in an attempt to add drama. The narrator made Helen sound fearful, anxious and near tears in every single sentence.
The men, who were battle tested warriors sounded fearful. Even the Goddess Athena sounded anxious, rather than confident. Geez, if an Olympian Goddess is whiny, what hope is there for the rest of the book?
I'm guessing it's a "dramatic" technique for narrators who can't dig deep and cinvey the actual drama inherent in the scene. I've heard this tone in other audio books and it was equally annoying.

From fixing the class computer to repairing old radios, 12-year-old Iris is a tech genius. But she's the only deaf person in her school, so people often treat her like she's not very smart. If you've ever felt like no one was listening to you, then you know how hard that can be. When she learns about Blue 55, a real whale who is unable to speak to other whales, Iris understands how he must feel. Then she has an idea: She should invent a way to "sing" to him! But he's 3,000 miles away. How will she play her song for him?

Historical Fiction Relevant to Current Events
Reviewed: 05-26-19
This heart wrenching historical fiction tells the story of the creation of the modern Jewish state in 1948. It is seen through the eyes of a young Jewish woman who was liberated from a Nazi concentration camp at the end of WWII and fled to Palestine.
The book is well researched. It held my interest in a way that a documentary history might not. It gave me a deeper understanding of the Arab / Isreali conflict that erupted in 1948 and continue unabated today.
One thread in the story is the bond between an Arab nurse and the Jewish heroine. It showed how friendship and peace are possible when people are willing set aside their religious and cultural differences and be "humans first".
