Story
Disgraced eldest sister Claire Summers has been living in exile as companion to a stern great-aunt in Scotland. About to lose her place and longing to be reconciled with her estranged family, Claire sees an advertisement from someone looking for a “respectable female partner” in a Sidmouth boarding house. Is it a sign? She answers the ad, hoping she has not made another reckless mistake. When she meets the handsome, secretive proprietor, she wonders what he’s hiding and if he’s any more trustworthy than the nobleman who betrayed her years ago.

No closure for Sarah
Reviewed: 12-29-24
So annoyed with this book. After waiting months for it to release on audible, we still have no happiness for Sarah. Instead, the book is consumed with a character we have no emotional connection with from the previous books. Really, really disappointed.

Story
Sir Gareth Ludlow never truly recovered from the death of his fiancée. Years later, a chance encounter with Amanda, a young and devastatingly pretty runaway, inspires him to try to do the right thing and to set her on a path towards a good life. But Sir Gareth has been neck-deep in a life of debauchery and hedonism ever since his fiancée's death, and Amanda's startlingly lively imagination proves to be more than he'd bargained for. As they both become increasingly entangled in Sir Gareth's scheme, it seems more and more difficult for either of them to lead the life they should.

Really not a favorite of this one by G. Heyer. The narrator has some major hiccups along the way, the pauses appearing in such strange places. The accent also seems affected and when she says "bath" just like any American would, it's quite jarring. The story is... quite frankly, annoying. Almost insulting to one's intelligence. No.. not Heyer's usual fare.

Reviewed: 07-16-24
Simon Prebble has a pleasant voice, easy to listen to, albeit a little too soft sometimes. This story is very good, keeps you vested until the very last moment. One of Klassen's best I'd say and I've listened to quite a few. I was really beginning to be very sad about how it was all unfolding and while I don't want to give any spoilers, I will say, it's a very nice ending.

And yet she had a determined spirit and magnificent hazel eyes. So when her great-aunt Hester left her unexpected wealth, Henrietta set out to conquer London's glittering high society and confound them all.

The narration is terrible, not an ounce of voice acting other than the shrill whinings of an elderly lady throughout. The story is vapid and without substance and forget forming a character...who needs it apparently! Really a terrible experience.

But the truth is soon uncovered: Léon is a girl named Léonie and is actually the legitimate child of the Comte and his wife. While Avon is intent on his plan to reveal the Comte’s duplicity and ruin him, he is charmed by Léonie’s kindness, falls in love, and becomes a changed man.

I’ve enjoyed most other GH novels, but this one I found a little tiresome. Perhaps it was the narrator. While not overtly annoying, there comes a point of weariness in listening to a female voice giving every male character a “gruff” tone in an attempt to sound …manly? This narrator ruined the book for me. Perhaps I am spoiled by listening to Juliet Stevenson.

Story
The most popular and beloved American historical novel ever written, Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind is unparalleled in its portrayal of men and women at once larger than life but as real as ourselves. Now best-selling writer Alexandra Ripley brings us back to Tara and reintroduces us to the characters we remember so well: Rhett, Ashley, Mammy, Suellen, Aunt Pittypat, and, of course, Scarlett.

How bad can one book be?
Reviewed: 05-04-23
Honestly, I wanted to love this. GWTW is my all time favourite story and I know every line in the movie by heart! This book…is absolutely wretched. Save your money. Suddenly Scarlet has two children older than Bonnie! And that’s just the beginning blasphemy. Not a single character has any depth, even Scarlet! it’s like a cardboard cartoon of GWTW. Add to a wretched story, a narrator who sounds 80 and therefore so does every character and you have a perfect storm of vapid idiocy. Worst purchase ever!

Very good

I wasn’t sure about Andy Serkis reading this, but I am most pleasantly surprised! No…he doesn’t do a great job with female voices, but then again, there are not a ton of female characters anyway. He doesn’t have a lot of character changes in voice either, but the man can build an atmosphere like few others I’ve ever heard. He can make the hair stand up on your neck, or bring the bitter tears to your eyes. I’ve read this series probably hundreds of times, but this was my first time hearing someone read it to me and I loved it! Well done indeed!
