Depressing
Reviewed: 05-03-24
I had good hopes for this story and doggedly finished to the awful end. As far as the mothers of this school were concerned, shouldn't most of them have jumped from the clock tower? A novel with never any hope at all is simply an exercise in describing depression. it did raise some interesting concerns for society especially in the wake of the Dobbs decision and the loss of so many of our rights. Pray that we never go here.

Romance writer Penelope Banks can write the perfect love story, but when it comes to family, all she’s got is a rough draft. Penny shelved the idea of fitting in with her high-achieving family years ago, but when her new business venture—a romance bookstore—is at risk of closing before its doors have opened, she’s forced to ask for help from the one place she never expected. Home.

...at first. I had a hard time with the first 2-3 chapters but the book picked up from there for me. Its set in one of my favorite places to vacation so there is a little added attraction. If it weren't for a few of the better characters and the wonderful narrator I probably wouldn't have finished. Too much poor little rich girl/family problems.

Story
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

first, I would like to honor the author for the courage and dignity she displayed in narrating her life story. I was proud of her for sharing these really difficult feelings and truths with us and to criticize her delivery in any way is shameful. I wonder, could any one of us do better? I cried more than once as I learned what her family went through. a terrible and beautiful story of a family facing poverty due to alcoholism and mental illness and how the children overcame the odds.

I couldn't put this entire series down and I binge-listened to each book one after the other! Each story was better than the last, until we got to Lyon and Olivia, which was just fantastic! What a beautiful love story. I wish it never had to end and that Pennyroyal Green was actually a real place. After the epilog, who knows? Maybe it is!

Story
Nicholas Delmore, the earl of Hawksley, was not expecting a snowstorm-sieged London evening to end with a dagger held to his throat. Nor did he anticipate his spirited attacker to have glossy black tresses and lush red lips that might invite a lesser gentleman to steal a kiss. But before he can demand his beautiful assailant to identify herself, she faints dead away in his arms.

I struggled to finish this one. I love these romance novels and the India parts were great. I really disliked the narrator especially during the steamy parts, she was just creepy. she also had trouble with the male voices, also creepy. I noticed a lot of modern phrases in the dialog that a better editor could have fixed. All said, this was a good story with a few bugs that could be overlooked. I don't think I would buy a next one if it was available, specifically because of the narrator.

WARNING ⚠️ TRIGGER ALERT
If you're a survivor of domestic or spousal abuse like me, this book may TRIGGER emotional responses. I'm surprised that I made it half way thru, but the author kept drowning on and on about it until finally I had a massive anxiety attack. Very careless, there should be a warning before purchase!

Story
In the tourist town of Wharton, on the coast of Lake Superior, Tess Bell is renovating her old family home into a bed-and-breakfast during the icy dead of winter… As the house’s restoration commences, a shuttered art studio is revealed. Inside are paintings Tess’s late grandfather, beloved and celebrated artist Sebastian Bell, hid away for generations. But these appear to be the works of a twisted mind, almost unrecognizable as paintings she and others familiar with his art would expect.

I really liked this book. I almost didn't get it because of other reviews, but I am happy that I did. I realize that this story is not hard core horror and can understand other's thoughts on that, but for myself, I just enjoyed the story. It was a nice little break and I actually really did enjoy Ms. Sand's narration. I have listened to her before and liked her voice. Don't be afraid to try this one out. It isn't hard-core, but neither is it a cozy mystery!

Story
What do gorgons, basilisks, and frogs with feathers all have in common? They're all considered mythological by modern science, and some people are working very hard to keep them that way. Alexander Price is a member of a cryptozoological lineage that spans generations, and it's his job to act as a buffer between the human and cryptid worlds - not an easy task when you're dealing with women who have snakes in place of hair, little girls who may actually be cobras, and brilliant, beautiful Australian zookeepers.

Narrator grew on me
Reviewed: 02-05-23
I usually have a hard time with male narrators but I have to say this one did grow on me. I did, however, really dislike his voices for the female characters. Another thing that bothered me was Verity's cameo. Why couldn't she have voiced Dominic instead of HIM giving Dominic that weird accent 🙄 All in all I did enjoy the tale of another Price sibling and other family members and Cryptids.

Story
The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity - and humanity from them. Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she'd rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and when her work with the cryptid community took her to Manhattan, she thought she would finally be free to pursue competition-level dance in earnest. It didn't quite work out that way...

Flannery Butler's daddy, Beauregard "Honey Bee" Butler, entrusted her with his recipes before he passed on, swearing her to secrecy. But Flannery is harboring other secrets too, about her twin sister Patsy, older by eight minutes and pretty in a way Flannery knows she'll never be. Then comes the prom night when Patsy - wearing a yellow chiffon dress and the family pearls - disappears along with her date.
