Story
With The Witch Doctor’s Wife, Tamar Myers delves into her personal history as the daughter of Christian missionaries in the Belgian Congo. Rich and alive with the sights and sounds of the continent—as exciting, evocative, charming, and suspenseful as Alexander McCall Smith’s No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency novels—Myer’s unforgettable excursion to colonial Africa recalls Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible, even the Academy Award-nominated film Blood Diamond.

Not your everyday mystery!

Fantastic story that unfolded masterfully! It wasn't a straightforward mystery (to my relief) and I learned a lot of historical, cultural, and scientific things that will stick with me for a long time. If you're tired of the formulaic stories that are being cranked out like Peeps on an assembly line, try this audiobook! (Note: I listened at 1.2 speed. A slower narration may feel draggy.)

Story
Cracow, 1893. Zofia Turbotyńska—professor’s wife and socialite—is bored at home, with little to do but plan a charity auction sponsored by the wealthy residents of a local nursing home and the nuns who work there. But when one of those residents is found dead, Zofia finds a calling: solving crimes. Ridiculed by the police, who have declared the deaths of natural cause, she starts her own murder investigation. With her husband blissfully unaware of her secret, Zofia remakes herself into Cracow’s greatest—or at the very least, most surprising—amateur detective.

If E. F. Benson and Agatha Christie conspired to write a story together, this would be the highly entertaining result of the collaboration...Queen Lucia combined with Miss Marple. It's quite simply the best audiobook I've heard in a long, long time! (I listened at 1.15 speed which made for a brisk, crisp narration that lent itself well to the story. Any slower and the accents would come across as cumbersome, I think.)
Easy 5 big stars!
You won't regret the listen if you're a fan of intelligent, slightly mocking humor combined with tricky murder mysteries!

What a charming mystery! I listened to the audiobook version on 1.15 speed and enjoyed the narration as well as the tangly (but not impossible to follow) mystery. If you are interested in Indian culture, clever women leads, and satisfactory endings, you'll like this story. I hope there are more books forthcoming from this author.

Mystery=excellent
Setting=brilliant
Descriptions=amazing
Characters=I liked them all, but Diana was tiresome. 🙄
The first half of the story was fantastic and intriguing, the last half I merely endured. It was almost two different books, smashed together!

I was taken aback at the house incredible amount of detail in the descriptions if characters, settings, and forensics but thoroughly enjoyed the whole book once I adjusted my listening style! 😁
If you like British cop/detective TV shows, you'll love listening to this story.
(Note: I listened to it at 1.3 speed which made the narrator's voice brisk...a wonderful match for the tone of the book. If you find yourself dragging along, try speeding it up, but don't give up. The ending is very satisfying and you won't want to miss it!)
