Acerca de esta escucha

Two sisters. One death. No memories.

Cora should remember every detail about the night her stepsister, Hannah, fell down a flight of stairs to her death, especially since her Cerepin - a sophisticated brain-computer interface - may have recorded each horrifying moment. But when she awakens after that night, her memories gone, Cora is left with only questions - and dread of what the answers might mean.

When a downward spiral of self-destruction forces Cora to work with an AI counselor, she finds an unexpected ally, even as others around her grow increasingly convinced that Hannah's death was no accident. As Cora's dark past swirls chaotically with the versions of Hannah's life and death that her family and friends want to believe, Cora discovers the disturbing depths of what some people may do - including herself.

With her very sanity in question, Cora is forced to face her greatest fear. She will live or die by what she discovers.

What a twist❗

What a twist! Read to the end to find out what really happened!

The narrators are great.

I love that this is a stand alone book, but also incorporates tidbits of Sarah Fine's other book "Beneath the Shine," which I'm glad I listened to first as it explains how mostly everyone is literally plugged into technology.

This story is about the destructive relationship between two step sisters (Cora & Hannah) that ends in the death of one of them. Murder or accident?

Unlikeable Characters

I just didn’t like any of the characters at all. The best friend was good but such a tiny part of the story. I listened to the book not read. I’m sure the Narrator read it as directed but there was just way too much anxiety and angst in her voice all the time. I was barely 2 hours in and I was checking the time to see how much was left of the book because I didn’t think I was going to be able to listen anymore. The end redeemed it a bit. I never would have been able to finish if I was reading. Some of the futuristic technology was fun though.

As expected with Sarah Fine, amazing. She has never failed to deliver. I can't wait to start the next one.

i’ve never read/listened to a Sarah Fine novel i didn’t 💕!

and This book was no exception! you know who you’re routing for the whole time and, even after the amazing twist at the end, you are still on her side.

Ever felt like you are totally missing something?

Sarah Fine builds a universe in "Uncanny" and "Beneath the Shine" that is chilling, relevant and deeply impacting. A picture of what may come if we keep saying yes to technology and products with unknown impact and potential.

I have read "Beneath the Shine" and it is clear and coherent and compelling so I was excited to continue with other books in this universe but Uncanny is a completely different offering. For me, the editing has let it down - the storyline seemed muddled and confused. There was social commentary by the bucket load but in the end I was unclear on the messages. Super unclear....

In contrast to other readers I abslutely hated the ending - it was like aliens had taken over Cora and Rafique. It didn't flow for me and was a very dark way to end Cora's story. Rafique was Cora's Robot Psychologist termed a 'Canny' in the novel which was a very unique and fresh concept but the utter hopelessness I felt about Cora's future and prospects all the way through the novel was disquieting. If Cora is meant to be a portral of someone on the autistic spectrum, even more disturbing.

So in summary, not my favourite dystopian novel at all though I found the universe very engaging and giving Rafique a POV unique and creative, The narration is consistently excellent throughout the novel.

Well, it was free with KU...

Like romance novels have rules (happily ever after) and tropes, it seems more and more books (particularly by white authors) are following rules. If aliens landed and surveyed our books from the past few years, they'd determine that people on the Autism scale were as common as grass. It's getting really old and boring. Sometimes I like to read about something I'm familiar with on a personal level but enough is enough.

Next: Must have diversity so insert person of color. In this case it's the best friend, Netta, who wears a hijab. But that's it. She could have been any color or religion. Even the artificial intelligence guy, Rafiq, is a POC, but obviously there's no particular "cultural" background there.

As for questions surrounding artificial beings and how "human" are they, I'd suggest Cassandra Rose Clark's The Mad Scientist's Daughter, which was written for an adult audience and did not plod along like this book did--despite there being a mystery in this one.

weird

Very dry, very boring. I am fan of Sara Fine. This book was very off the mark. The parts from the Robot's perspective were hard to get through.

THIS IS SOOOO RIDICULOUS ITS EMBARRASSING

I am a sci-fi addict and normally suffer ignorance from authors that are not very good. But this is UTTERLY WORTHLESS and should have NEVER been published!!! The author knows NOTHING BUT CRAP about AI or digital over biological/chemical signals systems. Oh yeah, and the entire scenario is childish!!! Aswell as overly detailed in spots to hide the author’s inability to imagine a plausible story scenes! Also the lack of common sense used by individuals that are pushed to a certain point that violence is the answer and yet they will not fight for their own survival. Those people do not deserve the O2 they breathe.
