Acerca de esta escucha

What if we sent freighters instead of frigates?

In a universe run by corporations, where profit matters more than life, how can an orphan with no skills, no money, and no prospects survive?

When Ishmael Wang's mother dies in a senseless accident, he's given a choice: leave the planet on his own, or the company will remove him. To avoid deportation Ishmael finds work as a mess deck attendant on an interstellar freighter.

Find out what Ishmael must do to earn his Quarter Share.

Okay... wow.

This series came to my attention because the author's next series, set in the same universe, showed up in an audible sale. It sounded like it could be a refreshing change, but I put off buying that one because this previous series seemed to have some good word of mouth going on.

I was aware that it was written from the point of view of a merchant spacer rather than the usual navy captain, but, as the title says, wow.

I was immediately pulled in to the story by being able to empathize with the character and believe that in his situation I might have made similar choices. That put me immediately on his side, because I'm always right.

Such a refreshing story. His successes don't change the world, but they are very meaningful for the character and those around him. The stakes don't seem any less important for the lack of combat.

In my own life I've found myself stranded in a strange city, the industry I was working in collapsing, and wondering what I was going to do to put food in my mouth and have a roof over my head. With that experience in mind, each success flooded me with the same relief the character must have felt.

Yes, yes and yes again. I can't wait to continue this series.

Great start to a series

I picked this book up on a whim and I'm glad I did, the only bad thing is that have to wait until the second book comes out on audio book.

No Pirates or slavers but a dang good story

Normally I like A story with an enemy and violent takeover‘s and attacks, but this time I enjoy just the play inflow of the character development this is a very good book and I would suggest it even for us that like a lot of adrenaline

The Lost Podiobook

If you think this looks familiar from bout a decade ago, this is what you remember. It’s a slow serial about life in the people who run the ships of interplanetary trade. It’s about duty and economics in a rational economics environment. No big battles or prophetic reveals. Just a comfortable ride through making friends and deals.

Leadership

I first read this series when it was published as a podiobook. With hindsight, I realize now that my leadership career as a school administrator mirrored much of the experiences and strategies of Ishmael Wong. This is my favorite science fiction series that I have ever read and, I think, one that all aspiring leaders should take to heart.

A modern classic, YOU CANNOT MISS THIS!!

as a kid growing up in the 90s, I LOVED tales like Treasure Island, Moby Dick and Master and Commander. Growing up I would play pretend that I was the daring captain, fighting against all odds to survive a storm (while sitting in a cardboard box.)

As we all know, time never stops, and the years flew by with deceptive speed. That kid grew up. But with this book, I could feel myself being that kid again, with the same sense of wonder. The story, the characters, even the ship herself, quickly became friends of mine, and me a cohort in their adventure.

Do not allow yourself to miss this. worth the credit or the buy.

The series’s was a gift for my dyslexia.

I have heard this and all of the books in the series before it landed here.

The experience were Mr. Lowell tells his own stories brings you to a place deep down in the best character shaping of all time.

Wish I could hear him reading the latest books as well.

The book series is easy to follow but extremely detailed. The shaping of time and place is like I wish I could experience this future myself. Wish i was in a lifetime were I could meet the characters in this addicting story.

Maybe the greatest science fiction books in modern time.

Must listen entire series and keep an eye out for secret tales the continuation

Love, science, math, trade,Adventure this riveting story about a young man who tries to find his only way in a new unprecedented world between the stars. It is an exciting fast pay story which the science and math is super intriguing to see if we will catch up to this technology and when we do exactly how far fiction is the stories? Is the main character grows the Bonsey forms with coworkers and those around him I want is that we even in this time and reality strive to make the bottom is this friendship are the strongest I want keeps us all safe and sound from the deep dark fast paced through very intriguing for those who love adventure love romance in US math and science although the math and science and technology side is prevalent it does not take out most of the stories of those who do not find it interesting on overwhelmed but yeah it’s traveling enough to keep the mind engaged and make us stare at the stars and wondered when we travel probably clean them will we be using the technology that we read about?

a fun and relaxing read

I had these stories since Mr Lowell read them as a podcast. and I'm sorry I did not give a review. He does describe a golden age not a utopia but I wish I were 18 again and able to sign on to the Louis. definitely worth a listen

feel good scifi

I re-listened to this with its new narrator, Jeffrey Kafer. I have to give him props for performing under the kind of expectations those who fell in love with the original performance by the author, Nathan Lowell, took into this listen. Ultimately, I still prefer the Nathan Lowell version, but those are no longer available, and really how can you compare the original that you fell in love with? In this case, this series is still very highly recommended. It's the everyman kind of scifi that interests you with a businessman's train of thought in a trader's economy imagined in a time where travel between planets is common place. The characters are genuine and lovable, especially our main character, who is forced onto his own with nothing to lose and gains valuable friendships and life lessons.
