Acerca de esta escucha

A penetrating biography of one of the most infamous members of the Nazi high command.

In Goering, Roger Manvell and Heinrich Fraenkel use firsthand testimonies and a variety of historical documents to tell the story of a monster lurking in Hitler's shadows. After rising through the ranks of the German army, Hermann Goering became Hitler's right hand man and was hand-picked to head the Luftwaffe, one of history's most feared fighting forces. As he rose in power, though, Goering became disillusioned and was eventually shunned from Hitler's inner circle. Alone at the end, he faced justice at the Nuremberg trials and was convicted of war crimes and crime against humanity. He committed suicide in prison before he could be hanged. In this book, Manvell and Fraenkel bring to life one of history's most complicated and hated characters.

A thoughtful look at an evil man.

I greatly enjoyed the book. It was well researched and did a great job of explaining the events and history of Goering's involvement with the Nazi party and the second world war.
It is a scary tale on how intelligence, charm, and ability can be combined with heartless ambition and terrible evil. A man who loved art, music, and culture but had no mercy for or guilt over the suffering and deaths he caused of tens of millions of people. A very frightening tale indeed.

A balanced account, but a little short

A worthy account of Goering's life, and it's breakneck speed should make it very digestible for people who don't want to drown in endless detail. Unfortunately for me, I am not one of these people, so the book was over all too quickly.

In published form it comes in just shy of 500 pages, and given the breathlessly eventful life that Goering lived, major events are breezed through or completely ignored. Goering's knowledge of, or self-proclaimed ignorance of, war crimes and atrocities is never discussed in any detail, which seems a missed opportunity.

Nevertheless, given the lack of modern books about Goering, who as the least ideological of the Nazi leaders is usually overlooked in favor of grimmer figures like Himmler and Hitler, we should be thankful this exists at all.

Not worth the time or money

This book doesn’t really add any new info to what most of us already know about Goering.

The book was ok, but it seemed really rushed, and the book discredits itself on two major issues.

While it acknowledges that Goering and Hitler themselves didn’t seem to know about the holocaust, and that there is no evidence that the Nazis themselves were responsible for the burning of the Reichstag building, the book gets the cause of death for both Hitler and Goering wrong.

The book states that Hitler shot himself in the mouth, when he actually shot himself in the right temple while biting down on a cyanide capsule.

The book also says that Goering swallowed some crystals that caused his death, when really he bit down on a cyanide capsule as well.

With that being said, who knows what else it got wrong?

Goering

"Goering" by Roger Manvell is a detailed and comprehensive biography of Hermann Goering, one of the most notorious figures of Nazi Germany. Manvell's work is a thorough examination of Goering's life, providing a detailed and nuanced look at his rise to power, his role in the Nazi Party, and his eventual downfall.

The book begins with Goering's early life, detailing his upbringing and his early career as a fighter pilot during World War I. Manvell then goes on to examine Goering's political career, including his involvement in the founding of the Nazi Party, his role in the Beer Hall Putsch, and his eventual rise to become Hitler's right-hand man.

Manvell's writing is both engaging and informative, providing a detailed account of Goering's actions and motivations while also exploring the broader historical context in which he operated. He also does an excellent job of highlighting the contradictions and complexities of Goering's character, showing how he was able to maintain a façade of charm and charisma even as he committed heinous crimes against humanity.

One of the strengths of "Goering" is its attention to detail. Manvell draws on a wide range of sources, including Goering's own diaries and letters, to provide a vivid and detailed portrait of the man and the era in which he lived. The book is also well-researched, with extensive footnotes and a bibliography that will be of great value to scholars and researchers.

Overall, "Goering" is an excellent biography that provides a detailed and nuanced look at one of the most controversial figures of the 20th century. Manvell's writing is engaging and informative, and his attention to detail makes this book a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Nazi Germany.

Insight to Göring

Well read and informative book. Many books about the Nazis seems very one sided, but this one wasn’t.

Important story but the narrator is awful

Oh my god the nasal twang is annoying and made the book unlistenable. A real pity.
