The award-winning and critically-acclaimed master of horror returns with a pair of chilling tales - both never-before-published in print or audio - that examine the violence and depravity of the human condition. Bringing together his acclaimed novella The Sea Dreams It Is the Sky and an all-new short novel My Heart Struck Sorrow, John Hornor Jacobs turns his fertile imagination to the evil that breeds within the human soul.

Half great
Revisado: 10-06-24
The first of the two stories is awful: I nearly gave up on the book halfway through it. It wasn’t even obvious that it was a horror story until about the last five minutes. In addition to the story being uninteresting, the narrator was using the same voice for all the characters, so a lot of the time I couldn’t even tell who was speaking, which made it harder to follow.
However, the second story was magnificent. 11/10. Had it been the only story, this would be a shorter but five star book. I recommend skipping straight to the second novella.

The visionary writer and director of Get Out, Us, and Nope, and founder of Monkeypaw Productions, curates this groundbreaking anthology of all-new stories of Black horror, exploring not only the terrors of the supernatural but the chilling reality of injustice that haunts our nation. Featuring an introduction by Peele and an all-star roster of beloved writers and new voices, Out There Screaming is a master class in horror, and—like his spine-chilling films—its stories prey on everything we think we know about our world . . . and redefine what it means to be afraid.

I’m a horror anthology aficionado, so I know not to expect perfect. Usually stories in anthologies are split between good-meh-bad. Unfortunately, this book ranges only from meh-bad.

J. Gresham Machen once said, "False ideas are the greatest obstacles to the reception of the Gospel" - which makes apologetics that much more important. Wanting to engage not just academics and pastors but Christian laypeople and seekers, William Lane Craig has revised and updated key sections in this third edition of his classic text to reflect the latest work in astrophysics, philosophy, probability calculus, arguments for the existence of God, and Reformed epistemology.

Below average
Revisado: 11-19-23
This is a below average anthology. In all anthologies the stories are hit or miss. These are mostly miss. The value is decent considering that it’s a compilation of books, but the quantity doesn’t mask the lack of quality.

Historia
Many Indigenous people believe that one should never whistle at night. This belief takes many forms: for instance, Native Hawaiians believe it summons the Hukai’po, the spirits of ancient warriors, and Native Mexicans say it calls Lechuza, a witch that can transform into an owl. But what all these legends hold in common is the certainty that whistling at night can cause evil spirits to appear—and even follow you home. These shiver-inducing tales introduce listeners to ghosts, curses, hauntings, monstrous creatures, complex family legacies, desperate deeds, and chilling acts of revenge.

Literally couldn’t finish this…the idea caused me physical pain. Extremely amateurish writing…comes across like a collection of ghost stories written by high school students. And pretty much all the stories are of the variety of ‘it turns out that racism was the real monster all along’. Strongly recommend you save your credit.

Historia
Dr. Francis Collins, head of the Human Genome Project, is one of the world's leading scientists, yet he is also a man of unshakable faith in God and scripture. Dr. Collins has resolved the dilemma that haunts everyone who believes in God and respects science. Faith in God and faith in science can be harmonious, not separately but together, combined into one worldview. For Collins, science does not conflict with the Bible, science enhances it.

I generally love books like this but I almost couldn’t finish this one. A big issue is that it’s so dated and so much of it’s defense of Darwinism feels really dated. But also….why? I don’t understand the point of this book.
Here’s the summary: ‘I used to not believe in God but now I do. You should believe everything scientists tell you because it’s probably right but also doesn’t provide evidence against God.’
Really the only interesting bits were the appendices where the author discusses ethical implications of genomics. This, too, however, feels really dated.

Historia
One of the most peculiar and possibly unique features of humans is the vast amount of information we carry outside our biological selves. But in our rush to build the infrastructure for the 20 quintillion bits we create every day, we’ve failed to ask exactly why we’re expending ever-increasing amounts of energy, resources, and human effort to maintain all this data. Drawing on deep ideas and frontier thinking in evolutionary biology, computer science, information theory, and astrobiology, Caleb Scharf argues that information is, in a very real sense, alive - an aggregate lifeform.

What did I just read?
Revisado: 09-21-23
This book is moderately entertaining at points, though, frankly, paper thin with the material that really matters. One issue for me was how the author would sprinkle in progressive political elements in strange ways that seemed forced and didn’t advance the narrative. For example, while discussing some of the information science historical advancements made by Bell Labs, the author made a quick sidebar away from the historical review to mention that almost all Bell Labs’ scientists were white back in those days. Like…why? Why bring race into a discussion on historical developments in information science. There’s stuff like that throughout the book. It’s very distracting, and moves the focus away from the core focus of the book.

Can space be divided into smaller and smaller units, ad infinitum? Does space extend to larger and larger regions, on and on to infinity? Is consciousness reducible to the material brain and its neurons? What was the origin of life, and can biologists create life from scratch in the lab? Physicist and novelist Alan Lightman explores these questions and more - from the anatomy of a smile to the capriciousness of memory to the specialness of life in the universe to what came before the Big Bang.

Revisado: 08-26-23
Lightman is a fantastic popularizer of science and an excellent communicator, but this book fell flat. First…I’m not even sure what it was suppose to be about. Second, I was a bit bothered by some things he asserts as settled that are very much still being sorted.
