It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low.

Addictive listening
Revisado: 11-21-23
This is the kind of book that hooks you in. Collins leaves beautiful cliff hangers at the end of each chapter so that you want to listen to more. Dynamic character development, and overall gives the reader meaningful context for the original series.

Historia
On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.

A great listen for self reflection. Brene Brown challenges folks to think about how they engage with the world around them and ways we can evolve to support ourselves, our children, our partners, and our communities better.

Why Sherman Alexis and Chicken Mean So Much
Revisado: 08-02-23
It’s a story about friends and how they shape you. It’s a story about how a person can fall in love with books. It’s not only a great story and accessible story about poverty and wanting to get out; it’s beautifully performed by the author. The commentary afterwards is also nice. Give it a listen.

A fantastic classic
Revisado: 07-24-23
I have read this book several times as an adult, and as a high school teacher, I think this book is one of the most powerful ones you can give to a middle school student. It a book that seems to provide a parental hug that says “it’s ok that you are you. You don’t need permission. You don’t have to conform to what everyone says. You and the compassion you bring to the world is enough.” If you have a 11, 12, or 13 year old kid who feels different, give them this book. If you are an adult, read the book too. Consider if you have the power to be a Mrs. Whatsit or an Aunt Beast. Maybe you are just a happy medium. Read the book. It is bound to open up your heart a bit.

And then, when Odysseus finally returns and slaughters the murderous suitors, he hangs Penelope's 12 maids.

Great story, narration—not so good
Revisado: 07-23-23
I love Atwood. Her work is always interesting, insightful, and beautifully crafted, and if what you want is an Atwood novel, this is a good. That said, the sound effects and narration style made me deeply consider returning the book, specifically the effects for the maidens voices was just poorly done. The main narrator is otherwise ok.

Throughout history, women have played integral roles in family, society, religion, government, war - in short, in all aspects of human civilization. Their contributions have often shaped history and shifted the axis of power for later generations of women. And yet, unearthing their stories from the historical record has often been a challenge. In Powerful Women of the Medieval World, Professor Dorsey Armstrong will introduce you to 10 amazing women who played vital roles in the Middle Ages.

I loved her series on the Black Death and its updated counterpart. This series about women in the Medieval era is equally intriguing, especially Olga of Kiev and the Mongol Queens.

Historia
You would think that when the United States of America was formed, our citizenry could finally enjoy a plethora of hard-won liberties. But that was not the case. While the new Americans no longer suffered from taxation without representation, many of the liberties we enjoy today were not part of their lives. In Liberty on Trial in America: Cases that Defined Freedom, you will learn how liberty increased in our country when individuals sued for those freedoms, when cases were brought specifically to test the limits of the Constitution with its Amendments....

Great overview of rights given through court history
Revisado: 07-28-22
I loved this overview. It needs to be updated given the recent overturning of Roe. However, it provides a meaningful overview of landmark cases. It helped me understand Citizens United with greater depth, but he did a nice job with each case.
