a bit hope yet times
Revisado: 06-15-17
I found the whole copper wire and Transformer juice a little unrealistic. while I can see both having value to one extent or another, I can't imagine large amounts of people chopping down power poles to get wire and mineral oil so quickly after the EMP. who is finding such great value in Copper but they're willing to barter away food and other things immediately after an EMP? I just can't see it. even gold and silver might have limited value immediately following a collapse. it would take time for a barter slash gold and silver type of economy to develop. it takes a lot of effort to chop down a powerpole, I just can't see people doing that.

Historia
After decades of planning, the contagion was unleashed, and overnight hundreds of millions died and came back as rampaging, undead monsters. The living that had been lucky enough to survive the first day of carnage, lucky enough to be in the right place, and lucky enough that some of them had the skills to survive soon found out there was much more to worry about than just zombies.

Entertaining but..
Revisado: 06-14-17
It was entertaining, better than some z books, worse than others, but 7/10. The twist of having truckers away from home was nice. I get the impression the authors understanding of truck drivers and their life and job is limited to what he's seen in convoy.
Consistency was a bit hard for the author as well. A zombie is fast enough and strong enough to tackle a motorcycle rider doing 100 mph, but later a teen is able to kill a few dozen while hanging upside down with a sharp stick. Another point that was difficult to believe was how the virus spread. This isnt a book that sweeps you up with it's believability but it is kinda fun and entertaining. I will buy the next when it comes out.

can't finish. hate it
Revisado: 06-14-17
I knew within the first 5 minutes this was bad. I tried to hang in there, hoping it would get better, hoping the author would do some character development, hoping he'd slow his roll and flash back to a wind up. nope. I gave it 2 1/2 hours. nope.
this is one note, no skill trash. if you don't care about character development, plot development, or engaging writing whoa buddy this piece of crap is for you!
I hope audible still has the book return thing, ugh.

Wait..wha???
Revisado: 03-31-14
Let me preface this by saying, I grew up listening to audio books my dad had checked out from the library and my favorite series was always this one. Now as an adult I've followed this series all the way through and re-listened to them many times. But this book has completely ruined the whole series for me. I may never go back to enjoy any of the Kate books again and its highly unlikely I'll buy another of Dana Stabenow's books again, that's how awful this book was.
The majority of the book was alright, I don't have much complaint about 95% of it. However the ending is so awful I will never re listen to this book and I may not listen to another Dana Stabenow book again. The ending is such a jolting moment that you have to rewind it and listen again because surely I missed something that did not seriously happen.
Not only are you (at least me) left feeling angered at what the author did to the two main characters, but that anger at the author is stretched further by the cliff hanger she left at the end. Worst. Ending. Ever.

Historia
These are true stories from the highways and byways of America. These first-hand accounts are as varied as the storytellers themselves—some are detailed and filled with the terror and suspense that made people feel they had to share what happened to them with others; others are brief and straightforward retellings of truly chilling events.

Take trucker stories with a grain of salt
Revisado: 03-31-14
There were actually very few ghost stories in the book. Mostly it was bizarre stories and trucker tales. I didn't expect to buy many of the stories but I at least expected some entertaining trucker stories and there were a few decent ones. Quite a few were blatantly bogus and not very compelling.

Historia
Do you think you have heard about the most haunted places in America? Over the past five years, the interest in the paranormal has decidedly come to the forefront. People flock to locations who wish to have experiences of their own and delve into the exciting, quizzical and frightening world of those who have passed on. When speaking about haunted places there are more than a few that are surely recognizable to most people.

"macabre"
Revisado: 03-31-14
The performance of this book is probably what bothered me the most. It jolts me from the story when certain (and in this instance, pivotal) words are mispronounced i.e. macabre. The reader's accent switches back and forth from very proper and almost mechanical vaguely british to home spun southern.
The book itself, as some other readers have said, is more a tourist guide than ghost story, some locations have tour types and times included. Further the book seems to rely heavily on television shows as "evidence" of haunting. It seems bizarre to me to read a book rehashing tv shows. Some of the locations were interesting, but most of the stories had a big lead up with little pay off. I frequently zoned out while listening because a fair bit of the book was just boring.

get it for the first half, not so much the second.
Revisado: 02-25-14
As some other listeners have said, the first portion of the book is the meat and potatoes. The first portion has alot of good info about what is good to take with you, what the author would take, what others would take. There are some recommended survival products with pros and cons for items, for example water filtration. Great ideas with pros and cons for bug out vehicles, and approaches to living off the land. I've listened to the first portion a few times, but when it gets to the second portion where the author skips around from region to region naming national parks, I turn it off.
I think the whole idea of listing national parks and what not is a poor one. Anyone thinking to bug out to the woods needs to have at least done some camping (ideally way more than some to actually achieve success) and have some good knowledge of their area and where to go to get off the map. Most folks thinking on this line of bug out defense have way better ideas of where to go than the vagaries of "the san isabel national park in colorado". Therefore the endless monotonous listing of state parks and forests in the second half is entirely useless, and boring.
