Historia
Vermont, 1950. There's a place for the girls whom no one wants - the troublemakers, the illegitimate, the too smart for their own good. It's called Idlewild Hall. And in the small town where it's located, there are rumors that the boarding school is haunted. Four roommates bond over their whispered fears, their budding friendship blossoming - until one of them mysteriously disappears.... Vermont, 2014. As much as she's tried, journalist Fiona Sheridan cannot stop revisiting the events surrounding her older sister's death.

Brilliant
Revisado: 12-29-21
I totally fell for The Sun Down Motel by Ms. St. James... loved the story, loved the characters. And I was just as happy with The Broken Girls. Beautifully written storylines, past and present, culminate in an ending I found flawless. I will be pre-ordering The Book of Cold Cases soon - March 2022 draws nearer by the moment.
Rebecca Lowman's narration was wonderful. She brought the characters to life perfectly. A great experience!

Brilliant characterization, complex, beautifully paced storylines, wonderful narration. Loved every second of this multi-POV story, and will be investigating Mr. Gregory's other books on Audible.

I loved every second of this beautifully written, atmospheric novel. Will definitely be reading more of Michelle Paver's work. Terrific MC.
Juanita McMahon did one of the finest jobs of narration I've ever experienced. What a joy to listen to her wonderfully nuanced reading. Well done, all! C

Terrific Book
Revisado: 11-02-21
I love the book, and am going to miss the characters. The MC was great, and I loved the insights into her mind and life, and sad existence. This is my third Audible book by Mr. Hendrix, and I'll be looking for others soon.
About the narration... I thought Ms. King acted the roles in the book beautifully, except that her line delivery was, for my taste, too slow. I took the advice of another reviewer and sped up the reading - in my case, to 1.15 normal - and the book flowed beautifully after that. Ms. King really brought the various people to life, and did a fine job with the male characters... and the female leads were presented as unique, engaging characters.
This is a terrific book.

Historia
For Rose Gardner, working at the DMV on a Friday afternoon is bad even before she sees a vision of herself dead. She’s had plenty of visions, usually boring ones like someone’s toilet’s overflowed, but she’s never seen one of herself before. When her overbearing momma winds up murdered on her sofa, instead, two things are certain: There isn't enough hydrogen peroxide in the state of Arkansas to get that stain out, and Rose is the prime suspect.

Didn't work for me
Revisado: 06-25-21
I usually do not write reviews unless I enjoy a book, but felt I had to throw my two cents in here, just as an alternative voice to the majority of reviews.
Sorry to say I did not enjoy this book. I found the MC to be an unreal collection of stereotypical southern princess tropes. I found her unbearable, and completely unsympathetic as a character. The additional characters did not seem like real people to me. They were cliches from beginning to end; scenarios seemed remarkably cliched, and the dialogue was unconvincing (I will reference the scene at a dinner post-funeral, and a bowl of flying jello).
The narrator reads really well, but there was an inflection to her line readings of the MC that contributed, for me, to the unlikeability of the MC.
No one book fits every person's reading needs, so your mileage may vary. But this did not work for me.

Brilliant, beautifully written, and totally engrossing. Loved the main character, and found the story's denouement totally satisfying. Perfect narration, too. Very excited to read the author's next work (hope he works with Ms. O'Donnell again, too!).

Loved this
Revisado: 06-04-21
Beautifully written book. Personally, I loved the main character, and was completely invested in her story, her fate. I found the additional characters in the novel very interesting, and real, and I loved the various storylines. Tai Sammons did an amazing job with the voice characterizations, and it was a pleasure listening to her narration. I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing this book.
As some reviewers have mentioned, the fact that edible cheesy crackers can still be found in convenience stores 25 years after the apocalypse seems a bit of a stretch, but I accepted this and moved past, and it was well worth the time. Looking forward to the author's next work!

Wonderful
Revisado: 05-25-21
I really loved these two books (the first in the series is Pilot X). It was all a bit confusing for me in the first few chapters of book 1, but once I caught on to the terminology/rhythms of the story and writing, I was totally charmed by the story and characters (the characters really grew on me throughout).
More happens in the first book than the second, but the story-lines for book two are very interesting. Pilot X and Verity are wonderful together. There is real humor throughout the series, and I LOLd in many places in both books. One thing I really like, especially in the second book, is that most of the secondary characters Pilot X meets are good and decent people. There are so many nice people in the stories, and that seems a rare thing to me, in SF these days.
I also want to give a huge shout-out to narrator Kevin T. Collins. His voice characterizations were amazing, and fit the writing's humor perfectly... may have even enhanced it. It is a perfect fit of story and narration.
Okay, again loved both books. I hope there will be a third story with these characters (and in some universe... this one, or one similar, depending on the story's requirements) very soon. Well done, all!

Historia
When Mouse’s dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother's house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be? Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there’s more - Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather’s journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants...until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself.

So surprised
Revisado: 02-12-21
I buy a lot of novels that are categorized as 'Horror'. The blurbs make many of them sound the same-ish, and then you give the book a listen, and hope for the best (when it's an author you're unfamiliar with).
But this book, WOW! I was so surprised, and so pleased. The Twisted Ones is brilliant, IMO, in every way. The set-up is brilliant... the first 3-4 chapters where the scene is established, and we learn about the protagonist, and her life. The novel is written in first person, and it really worked for me. Our lead is a dynamic, interesting, funny person. (There is a lot of really terrific humor throughout. I laughed/chuckled many-many times during my listen. Even in the tenser scenes, there was often humor, which I appreciated.)
The slow reveal of the 'horror' is beautifully handled, and we meet a cast of supporting characters that are universally real feeling, and that add great depth to the story (I particularly loved the woman I will think of as the second protagonist... a wonderful character whose name I won't mention, so as to not give anything away about characters' motivations in the story).
The horror here is unique to my experience, and believable and intense. As another reviewer has mentioned there is a legitimate jump scare in book, that really surprised me. The several leads are strong, intelligent women, and that's also very welcome and reasonably rare in the majority of the horror novels I've read... hope that changes over time.
I loved the ending, too. I am now in the process of seeking out another T. Kingfisher to read.
The narration here is lovely, and the narrator does some of the best characterizations of the various players in a book that I've ever heard. Each individual seemed like an individual, and she made each character seem alive, and worthy of consideration. Oh! And Bongo the doggie is believable as all get out!
This is a terrific audio book!
