Dreadful in Many Ways
Revisado: 12-05-24
Story is so-so, writing is mediocre, but the "narration" is the worst I've heard in the over 1200 audible books I've read. Sadly, I inadvertently bought 4 more in this series on a fire sale. Deleting them unread.

Historia
For a long time, no one pulling the strings in the comedy world thought that a woman over fifty from rural Tennessee could make it in the industry. But Leanne Morgan has defied the odds, reaching millions with her musings on hormones, low-rise britches, Weight Watchers, and her opposites-attract relationship with her husband, Chuck. In her charming southern accent, Morgan brings listeners inside her quest to find her voice after spending many years trying to figure out what that meant.

More Religious Than Her Internet Acts
Revisado: 11-03-24
I've enjoyed many of her clips on FB so I thought I'd enjoy her book. The first half is much like her routines but it gets more and more religious as it progresses. My only other complaint is that, while she frequently states that women shouldn't base their sense of self worth on their appearance, a full third of the book is about her body and her looks. This woman with 2 daughters, who acknowledges how damaging it is to focus on your appearance, gets a boob job, fake eyelashes and regular spray on tans and frequently mentions how cute she was when she was younger. Frankly, it got old.
There's also a ton of sexism, but if you've heard any of her routines you already expect that.
With these notes, if these issues don't bother you, it is good solid L Morgan humor. For me, a little goes a long way.

Historia
It’s a question everyone asks themselves, but few have to face in real life. English teacher Richard Boyle certainly never thought he would find himself talking down a former student intent on harming others, but when Mark LeDrew shows up at Richard’s school with a bomb strapped to his chest, Richard immediately jumps into action. Thanks to some quick thinking, he averts a major tragedy and is hailed as a hero, but not all the attention focused on him is positive.

Pretty Dumb
Revisado: 09-27-24
I don't mind a little suspension of reason in a novel but this book took it to the point of absurdity. Almost every character, especially the protagonist, makes one unbelievably dumb decision after another. E.g., a loser blackmailer wants 10k not to publicly accuse you of something you didn't do and fir which he has zero evidence and your reaction is to pay him? Because of course he wouldn't ever come back over and over, right?
Just really dumb. I want my credit and 9 hours back.

but very well paced, well acted show. I really enjoyed the twists and turns and this was an easy 4 stars until the last 2 sentences. Super unsatisfactory ending.

Historia
Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same well-to-do mansion block in London for decades. She lives a quiet, comfortable life, despite her deeply disturbing, dark past. She doesn’t talk about her escape from Nazi Germany at age 12. She doesn’t talk about the grim post-war years in France with her mother. Most of all, she doesn’t talk about her father, who was the commandant of one of the Reich’s most notorious extermination camps. All The Broken Places moves between Gretel’s girlhood in Germany to present-day London as a woman haunted by the past.

Central Fact Strains Credulity
Revisado: 09-09-24
First I should say that this is a very good novel with outstanding narration. However, I spent the entire story frustrated by the idea that we are expected to accept not just that a woman, for all of 76 years, not only holds her 12-15 year old self responsible for not stopping her father's actions during the holocaust but more incredibly that she has legitimate fear that she would be sent to prison for it. This holds true even as her NINETY-ONE year old self is blackmailed with the threat as well as throughout the story.
I didn't realize until the author's note at the end that the protagonist is from a previous novel in which her age and the underlying pivotal event are fixed such that the author had effectively tied his own hands. Nonetheless it requires a rather hefty suspension of belief to accept the character's driving motivation throughout.
Great ending, though!

Historia
It all started with a simple, yet sneakily difficult challenge from global best-selling author Harlan Coben: Pick a bird of prey, then use it as the inspiration for a brand-new story. The response from some of the best writers on the planet: Game on! The result: Eleven stories that are twisty, scary, surprising and bursting with imagination. An egg worth more than its weight in gold. A mysterious operative known only as Owl. An eagle-watcher who sees more than she should. Even a story that somehow places the Maltese Falcon in a nursing home.

really good
Revisado: 09-07-24
I am a fan of several of these authors, as well as Harlan. I'm not a short story fan but these were really enjoyable. The only exception is the one I was most looking forward to-- Greg Hurwitz's contribution isn't even a story, but a list of characteristics of a type of vampire. I kept waiting for the story to begin and it never did. Very disappointing for this huge Orphan X fan.

Historia
Members of the military’s special operations branches share a closely guarded secret: They love their jobs. They relish the opportunity to fight. They are thankful for it, even, and hopeful that maybe they’ll get to kill a bunch of bad guys while they’re at it. You don’t necessarily need to thank them for their service - the pleasure is all theirs. In this hilarious and personal memoir, listeners ride shotgun alongside former Army Ranger and private military contractor and current social media phenomenon Mat Best, into the action and its aftermath, both abroad and at home.

Super Juvenile
Revisado: 08-08-24
First, a confession-- I pushed just past the halfway point until I couldn't take anymore. This guy is like a 13 y.o. who doesn't want to grow up. Super demeaning view of women, the Army, anyone with any liberal thoughts, and non-operators in general, among others. This is a guy who elevated "fucking, feasting and fighting" to his idea of nirvana and envied his former h.s. friends who (at 22!) think any question about "what are you planning to do for work" (to pay for a joint lease on a house) makes you sound like a dad. He actually feels bad after asking the question and joins them for a summer of just fucking. At w8, maybe, but by 22 I expect responsible human beings.
There are much better books by our heros by much more mature men. Read them instead.

I was the party crasher. He was the Devil. Three months ago, I suffered a moment of insanity and had a one-night stand without even knowing who the man was. It was hot and unforgettable. I tried to forget him, but there are moments I swear I can still smell his aftershave. Little did I know he's the head of the Bratva. Alexei Koslov. My family's worst enemy. There's a thin line between love and hate, and I'm straddling it.

Pure Porn
Revisado: 07-17-24
I'm all for hot, steamy sex scenes but there needs to be at least a little story build up and character development. In fairness, I quit after the 2 main characters each had "the best sex of their lives" while on a dance floor in the first 30 minutes of the book. I also dislike really raunchy descriptions of sex (unless it fits the established storyline) and this was nothing but. We went from seeing each other across a dance floor to (her:) "I grabbed the bar so I'd cum even harder" in 5 minutes. Done. Too many good books out there to waste time on bad ones.

Historia
Cody Hoyt, while a brilliant cop, is an alcoholic struggling with two months of sobriety when his mentor and AA sponsor Hank Winters is found burned to death in a remote mountain cabin. At first it looks like the suicide of a man who's fallen off the wagon, but Cody knows Hank better than that. Sober for fourteen years, Hank took pride in his hard-won sobriety and never hesitated to drop whatever he was doing to talk Cody off a ledge. When Cody takes a closer look at the scene of his friend's death, it becomes apparent that foul play is at hand.

Unlikable Characters
Revisado: 07-15-24
It's so interesting that in the interview after the book, Box says that he thinks characters are more important than plot. I totally agree but in this book the plot was really good and the young girl Gracie is literally the only likeable character. I nearly quit reading several times because I find the protagonist the most unpleasant main character I think I've ever read. I will not be reading any more in this series. I do, however, enjoy Box's writing.
