Historia
The name Captain James Cook is one of the most recognisable in Australian history - an almost mythic figure who is often discussed, celebrated, reviled and debated. But who was the real James Cook? This Yorkshire farm boy would go on to become the foremost mariner, scientist, navigator and cartographer of his era, and to personally map a third of the globe. His great voyages of discovery were incredible feats of seamanship and navigation.

5 star book about James Cook
Revisado: 10-24-22
I love this book. Excellent history and superb reading performance. The book focuses on the 1st Pacific journey of James Cook. Only a brief overview in the epilouge of the 2nd and 3rd journey. Story ends with Elizabeth Cooks final days. This is a 5 star book in every way. I love Michael Carman's reading. He is the perfect voice for this book.

Historia
It began with a secret mission, no expenses spared. Spain, plotting to break Portugal’s monopoly trade with the fabled Orient, set sail from a hidden Mexican port to cross the Pacific - and then, critically, to attempt the never-before-accomplished return, the vuelta. Four ships set out from Navidad, each one carrying a dream team of navigators. The smallest ship, guided by seaman Lope Martín, a mulatto who had risen through the ranks to become one of the most qualified pilots of the era, soon pulled far ahead and became mysteriously lost from the fleet.

Favereau takes us inside one of the most powerful sources of cross-border integration in world history. The Horde was the central node in the Eurasian commercial boom of the 13th and 14th centuries and was a conduit for exchanges across thousands of miles. Its unique political regime - a complex power-sharing arrangement among the khan and the nobility - rewarded skillful administrators and diplomats and fostered an economic order that was mobile, organized, and innovative.

Golden Horde complete history, well done
Revisado: 03-10-22
The information in this book is great. The author goes into great detail into the beginning created by the death of Genghis Khan and splitting of the country amongst his sons, through the end of the Golden Horde in 1504. I think the author's ideas on the the foundation of the of the many cultures that the golden horde influenced is very well researched and makes very good sense. The narrator is sometimes hard to follow. She has somewhat of a droning voice. Once you get used to her dictation it's a little easier to follow along. If you are a history buff trying to compile a library of Asian history, I would strongly recommend this book.

Historia
When Alexander the Great died at the age of 32, his empire stretched from the Adriatic Sea in the west all the way to modern-day India in the east. In an unusual compromise, his two heirs - a mentally damaged half brother, Philip III, and an infant son, Alexander IV, born after his death - were jointly granted the kingship. But six of Alexander's Macedonian generals, spurred by their own thirst for power and the legend that Alexander bequeathed his rule "to the strongest," fought to gain supremacy.

Historia
In the years 434-454 A.D., the fate of Europe hung upon the actions of one man: Attila, king of the Huns. The decaying Roman Empire still stood astride the Western World, but it was threatened by a new force, the much-feared barbarian hordes. Attila was the one-man wrecking ball that helped put the final boot into Rome's decaying splendor.

Historia
The Scythians were nomadic horsemen who ranged wide across the grasslands of the Asian steppe from the Altai mountains in the east to the Great Hungarian Plain in the first millennium BC. Their steppe homeland bordered on a number of sedentary states to the south and there were, inevitably, numerous interactions between the nomads and their neighbours. The Scythians fought the Persians on a number of occasions, in one battle killing their king and on another occasion driving the invading army of Darius the Great from the steppe.

complete central steppe history 1500BC-430CE
Revisado: 02-04-22
I was very pleased with this book and will keep it as a treasured part of my library. The author goes from the early Andronovo 1500BC to the final days of the Alans as they absorb within the Vandals of northern Africa in 430. Great detail of culture, religion, government structure, military achievements and migration. It covers Eastern Asia including Xiongnu, Tocharians and many cultures I had not heard of before. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in early central Asian history.

This is a great book that follows the history of Mongolia after the last of Genghis' son's Kublai Khan. It was a great history of the rebuilding of the Mongol Empire and the involvement of the queens of Mongolia.
