Held my interest from the very beginning
Revisado: 12-28-23
I loved this story!! Beautiful written and narrated. Had enough intrigue to make you question on where the story was going. I enjoyed a story from the WW2 era that was from a different aspect and time frame than most.

Born in West Africa in the mid-eighteenth century, Maryam Prescilla Grace—a.k.a “Momma Grace” will live a long, wondrous life marked by hardship, oppression, opportunity, and love. Though she will be “gifted” various names, her birth name is known to her alone. Over the course of 100-plus years, she survives capture, enslavement by several property owners, the Atlantic crossing when she is only eleven years of age, and a brief stint as a pirate’s ward, acting as both a spy and a translator.

Throughly enjoyed
Revisado: 11-21-23
The narrator did an excellent job with different dialects. You could imagine the character and still understand what was being said. The first part of the book was difficult to follow as the ground work was being set. As the characters grasp of English took hold it was easier to follow along. So much of the first part was simply a one sided dialogue in her head that was a bit tedious at times.

An amazing story and performance
Revisado: 10-05-23
The first part felt pretty slow going and a bit mundane. But a book this long requires a good base set and characters need time to develop. Once events started happening in Lisa’s life it was hard to stop listening. I love WWII novels, but struggle because they are all starting to seem the same. But this story had a beautiful unique telling of a young girl’s life in England during it.

Tedious and drug on
Revisado: 09-22-23
The beginning was slow going. And the a bit hard to follow on who’s point of view. This was especially difficult towards the end when it would jump middle chapter. About the time it got interesting and you thought there would be a big reveal that you had been trying to figure out it just flamed out into nothing.

Entertaining and well written
Revisado: 12-22-22
I was able to become involved in the story early on. Characters were developed quickly enough to develop a liking or dislike for them early. Story was slightly predictable, but not too fairy tale like. The situations were very likely to happen in the time period.
Was a nice change from my usual time period and preference.

Slow character development
Revisado: 04-22-22
It was very slow starting. Lots of history and details in the artwork discussed before developing the characters. I quit it once but decided to give it a second try. And once the charters were developed I couldn’t wait to hear more and finish the story.

Very Captivating- but can be hard to follow
Revisado: 12-15-21
This book was absolutely amazing!! I was not expecting it to captivate me so quickly. My only complaint is that character’s story are switched very quickly at times and sometimes even mid-scene. So if sometimes it left me confused and would have to re-listen to part as I enjoy the book while working and my mind is completely focused on only the book. But I was hooked and couldn’t wait to listens some more from the very beginning.

Great story of WW 2 - narration something to be desired
Revisado: 11-05-21
The story, dialogue and narration of the WW 2 portion was outstanding and enjoyable. The portion set in 2017 was not so much. I think it would have been better but the narrator did nothing to help corny and bland dialogue.

Historia
When Grace, April, and Poppy join the US Army Nurse Corps, they see it as little more than an adventure, one made all the better by their first station: Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Joined at the hip, idealistic Grace, exuberant Poppy, and brave but haunted April frolic in the sun, attending parties, flirting with the handsome soldiers, and becoming fast friends with seasoned nurse Eva. Like the Hawaiian sun, their future seems warm and bright - until the infamous morning of December 7.

Predictably corny
Revisado: 01-07-21
I was not at all impressed with the writing style of this story or the narration of it. The combination of the two was at times too much to take at times. The story line was to predictable to the point of being corny. And when the the narrator tried to portray the emotions of the character and the dialogue literally had me rolling my eyes at times.
