Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Highly enjoyable! Great read!
Revisado: 03-25-22
I have enjoyed all of Andy Weir's books. This hit a sweet spot--highly entertaining space adventure and an artful weaving in of actual science written to educate-- classic Weir! Enjoyable speculative fiction with characters you come to care about. Wonderfully narrated br Ray Porter
Bias warning: I may be primed to enjoy this book (about a former scientist turned science teacher) as I am a high school science teacher on spring break. I was looking for a light read--and the frequent weaving in of science concepts (many high school science core ideas) applied to this fantastical tale was perfect for me! (it even gave me some teaching ideas!)
Thank you Andy Weir and Ray Porter! Now I can get back to my grading and lesson planning nicely refreshed!

Wonderful
Revisado: 05-27-17
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Very entertaining, creative and thought-provoking on the nature of our species.
Although it was written a few years ago it's particularly apt right now given the current political climate. It Is by no means inherently political but it's fantastical storylines lend themselves to interesting reflection about the nature of human behavior and the tension between our drives towards conflict and harmony.
The book was well-written, intelligent, and had some unique and intriguing elements.

Entertaining, but no Prince of Thorns
Revisado: 04-24-17
As this was Mark Lawrence, I had very high expectations. And this was an entertaining read.
I probably would have rated it higher if it were someone else. But I so loved the depth and quality of both the Prince of Thorns and the Prince of Fools series, that I can't help but feel disappointed.
Ok, let me try to be a bit more objective. If you are looking for a martial and magic, coming of age story (trained by nuns...in a rougher religious Hogwarts), that is entertaining, then look no further.
It reminded me so much of Blood Song (by Anthony Ryan) that I kept wondering if Lawrence used that as his model (and wove in some Harry Potter into the training/schooling, in a way that disappointed me). Yes, I'd say 4 parts Blood Song and 1 part Goblet of Fire (not in a good way).
But even so, I think I will likely listen to the sequel, so I have to admit I'm interested in the story and I was entertained.

Better than the first...
Revisado: 06-23-15
I enjoyed, but didn't love the first book. I'm not sure if this book is better than the first or if I just knew what type of experience to expect from Grossman, but I enjoyed this book even more than the first.
It is a similar experience with a somewhat similar story-arc and similar lesson/internal-conflict for the main characters.
It still had some brutally painful (and in this case disturbing; warning there is a rape scene) moments. But they punctuate the story and are used very purposefully to develop the characters and explain their motivations.
I just bought the next book.

Enjoyable.
Revisado: 06-23-15
I kept thinking of Joe Abercrombie as I read this book as there is something about the characters and storyline that is reminiscent of his work. Yet, it is no where near that gritty.
I enjoyed the characters and the storyline. I will definitely read the next book.

Fun new series! YES!
Revisado: 06-23-15
Finally a new series that I'm excited about!
This is a promising first book that I hope will lead to a great series. Its edges are soft (no hard emotional punches or grit in this plot line) it is a fun book with enjoyable character development, plot, and ideas.
While there are some extended military/battle scenes, there is also plenty of personal story line and interesting development of a grand mysterious magical/religious conflict.

GGK through and through, depth, maturity...
Revisado: 05-14-15
If you haven't read Guy Gavriel Kay, he does not pack his books full of physical action or high-fantasy magic systems. But his characters are rich, the plots are intricate, and the interpersonal, political, and mythical struggles are captivating.
I returned to him after a binge of YA that left my brain rotten and I am glad I did.
This is a rich and interesting story, told at a somewhat leisurely pace. I am on book two and I am still enrapt with the broad colorful story opening wide in this series.
