What a fantastic end to an incredible trilogy. Happy endings are hard to come by in this world, but what a wonderful, bloody journey. And the narrated performance is unrivaled. Worth every hour, every minute.

This is the last book in a series of 12 habit-forming books I found on a list. While it delivers a good message of accepting suffering as a part of life (ultimately resulting in happiness through understanding), it felt more like a chore to listen to than some of the other titles on the list (e.g. The Art of Learning, Atomic Habits). That said, it wasn't as hard to listen to as "How to Read a Book".

I found the narrator's voice to be quivering and unconfident.

Also, the 5 meditations could have been more "hands-on" by actually taking the time to walk us through them rather than telling us what to do, then moving on - this is a huge benefit of the audio format rather than a book format. If the listener doesn't have time, or is in the wrong location for it, they can skip it and return later to a guided meditation. Missed opportunity, but overall, a good message.

James Clavell is a master of sweeping epics, ensemble casts, and making the reader feel like they understand the period and ways of the people of that time.

Add to that the many brilliant voices of Gildart Jackson and you've got 50 hours of pure enjoyment ahead of you.

50 hours?! Yes, but just listen for 30 minutes here and there; don't rush it. Let the characters of Dirk Struan and Tyler Brock, of May-May and Aristotle Quance, and all the others bring you into their world, show you the power of their wills, and their secret desires.

By the end, you will not regret it, and you'll wish the 50 hours were doubled or tripled just to stay with these characters longer. Enjoy it!

Over the past 6 months, I've been on a mission to listen to a dozen books on forming habits, ignoring distractions, and cultivating happiness. This is one of the last books, and it IS simple in comparison to "How to Read a Book" or "7 Habits of Highly Effective People", but that's not entirely a bad thing.

While this book does tend to romanticize Japanese culture as somehow better and more in tune with nature than Western societies - and therefore leading to longer life - it provides a nice overview and exposure to various schools of thought and exercise. Personally, I have an on-and-off-again relationship with yoga, but as the narrator spoke about the different styles, I was reminded of all the various practices I have participated in, and it made me curious about the different styles of Tai Chi. This curiosity in new (to me) and various topics discussed in this book is - for me - the real value.

The rest of the book is a good reminder to practice patience, don't overeat, move, be around friends and loved ones, and to give yourself a break for not having life figured out.

Lastly, the performance is soothing. It might be a good book to listen to while doing a familiar yoga practice, or while sitting on the couch and sipping hot tea. Enjoy!

Covers a lot of ground and supports claims with stated research. Helped me get back to meditating and gave me a few instant items to pay attention to in my day-to-day routines.

Really good book on practical ways to become more focused on what YOU choose.

The hybrid work model of today forces people to be in front of screens during meetings, and it's easy to notice when eyes start to stray to other browser windows or messaging systems. Maybe the question posed in the book for "social antibodies" can work here too.

I recommend this book.

If you've ever felt stuck in a job/career where your skills are rarely used, but you remain busy throughout the day "checking in" with others, checking email or Slack msgs, and failing to have a good answer for "What would you say... you do here?" - give this book a listen. Nod along, then re-listen and put these suggestions into motion.

Personally, I had already said goodbye to most social media, so maybe the author is singing to the choir a bit here. That said, I'm eager to implement a couple of additional items like long walks in the woods for thinking through complex issues and removing responses to emails and texts as my default action... make 'em earn my response.

Highly recommend.

Really good book with a great deal of practical tips on how to analyze our own habits and change them to our liking.
The only con for me (highly subjective) is the narrator. His voice sounds like he's teaching a kindergarten class.

James's message is very clear and well supported with fantastic examples of what is required for building the life you want through small improvements. So many issues I face in my own mind are addressed here: giving up on something because it's too hard, because I'm not seeing enough improvement, because I "started too late", or because it's no longer new and exciting. Work is required - we all know that - but we don't have to summit the mountain on Day 1.
Thank you, James, for the reminders, examples, and ways to track our habits.

Josh has clearly done phenomenal things in his life so far, so it's interesting to hear his reflections on his learning process. However, I found myself growing impatient through his descriptions of chess and martial art matches. They felt more distracting than exemplifying the lessons. Still, I give this a solid 4 Stars!

I listen to books like this while exercising in the morning, so perhaps a focused, listening-only session would provide more. No doubt his message of celebrating the process towards achievement over the actual achievement will stick with me. Smaller Circles and Slowing Down Time are also interesting concepts.
