Never fails to delight
Revisado: 09-26-24
McMurtry brings together a ragtag bag of geniuses and goof ups who decide to open a Rhino Ranch in the planes of Texas. Each business group that wanders enter out is more bizarre than the last and hugely entertaining. This is one of the series. I did not read the beginning series, but I have a feeling that I would’ve known the characters much better. Had I started the series with number one I intend to go back because the characters are very likable, and the ending comes when it should I recommend it

If you liked Alice in Wonderland…
Revisado: 09-23-24
I can say that this book was quite witty, and I can only hope that that was the authors intent. It was a bounce around the vines and daily experiences of a random group of people who had some stuff in common. On any given scene, you could be in their nightmare, and a dream, in reality, or in fantasy, and they never told you, which was which, there were lots of murders. The main character was a real powerhouse with every limb and I guess it was meant to be funny. I read more than half and said my life is too short for this. Put it on the shelf. Go get another one.

Historia
Part human comedy and part mystery, Lies the Mushroom Pickers Told is an enthralling, masterful story about what holds a village together and what keeps people apart. When journalist Patrick Bracken returns to Gohen, the Irish village where he was born, he knows the eyes of the townspeople are on him. He has come home to investigate two deaths that happened decades earlier when he was a child, deaths that were ruled accidental.

This book just didn’t hang together. It was a lot of stories from quirky town residence. I kept on trying to find a point or a plot and gave up after about reading 50%. There’s too many good books left to hang one that is just falling short of what it needs to be.

When 14-year-old Jesse Pomeroy was arrested in 1874, a nightmarish reign of terror over an unsuspecting city came to an end. "The Boston Boy Fiend" was imprisoned at last. But the complex questions sparked by his ghastly crime spree - the hows and whys of vicious juvenile crime - were as relevant in the so-called Age of Innocence as they are today.

This is a 60 year saga of a killer kid, Jesse Pomeroy, who was a cunning criminal at a very young age. A shocked but sympathetic jury. Could not bring themselves to convict at 1stdegree murder because it was accompanied by capital punishment. Therefore, he languished in a prison with an interim sentence of life no parole end solitary confinement. This is an overview of the decades in which Jesse was either conducting crime or serving time for crime. my grandson is studying cyber criminology at University, I can only hope that this very old tail is part of his required reading as it touches on so much that we still deal with

Historia
At the age of 22, Jennifer Worth left her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in postwar London’s East End slums. The colorful characters she met while delivering babies all over London - from the plucky, warm-hearted nuns with whom she lived to the woman with 24 children who couldn't speak English to the prostitutes and dockers of the city’s seedier side - illuminate a fascinating time in history.

Historia
Danish countess Karen Blixon, known as Isak Dineson, ran a coffee plantation in Kenya in the years when Africa remained a romantic and formidable continent to most Europeans. Out of Africa is her account of her life there, with stories of her respectful relationships with the Masai, Kikuyu, and Somali natives who work on her land; the European friends who visit her; and the imposing permanence of the wild, high land itself.

Do narrative
Revisado: 07-24-24
This is a beautiful story really. And as I refer to it as a dull narrative, what I mean is that the narrator voice is expressionless and little excitement and sadness differentiate themselves. It’s hard for me to relate to someone who chooses to live so far away and in the land of strangers, who choose the same things, but they find camaraderie and peace and one another’s company.

Vietnam veterans are not at the top of the hero list. Especially unsung are the women who were nurses in the hospitals in Vietnam. This book is about those nurses, and about those that they served. Unusual topic a fascinating read.

Worthwhile listen
Revisado: 06-04-24
Brooke is a single mom who makes terrible decisions about the men in her life. Pregnant still in high school, with a bad boy boyfriend, Brooks life takes many wacky. Turns around two Maine male characters. She is the nurse practitioner in the prison system, where the father of her child has been imprisoned for attempting to kill her and killing several other people at a party gone bad. One thing for sure: there is no real life parallel in our court system that would dismiss charges so easily and let somebody out of prison. That takes years. But this after all was a bit of a fantasy fiction. Really enjoyable.
