I couldn't finish it
Revisado: 09-19-24
One of the characters in the book is a teenage rock star whose music is the heartbeat of America. Think Taylor Swift but younger. Unfortunately, Louis Sachar decided to sprinkle the narrative with her "songs"! Since there is no actual music, the listener is subjected to Curtis McClarin's brave attempt to make these fictional lyrics sound like a teenage girl rocking it on radio and in a live performance. If it had happened once or twice, I might have soldiered on, but after five or six of these dreadful moments, I gave up. The story wasn't worth the pain.

Historia
Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother's mysterious death, he's lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers. One day, he's tracked down by an uncle he barely knows - a man his mother claimed was dangerous. Uncle Randolph tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god. The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday.

Such a tragedy!....not the story....the narrator!
Revisado: 07-21-24
I had read a couple of bad reviews about the narrator of this book but love Rick Riordan's writing so much, I thought, "Oh, how bad can it be? I'll give it a go!" The answer is BAD! I have no idea how Christopher Guetig landed this gig. His voice is deadly, deadly dull: No inflection indicating emotion, no change of tone to indicate a male or female voice, and not a CHANCE of entertaining the listener with the foreign accents the story requires! It was absolutely painful to hear the feeble attempt to do some "mock-German" "mock-Irish" and "mock-Norse" accents. Just painful. And who in the world doesn't know how to pronounce the word "Korean"? He put the accent in the wrong place and pronounced it "corrian". I mean, that should be the simplest thing! Just read the script! I was feeling anxious by the time I got to chapter 2, miserably disappointed by chapter 5, and completely despairing by chapter 10. I thought I could push through to the end but fourteen hours of Guetig would have called my sanity into question. I am returning this title and hoping for a refund. (I would really love to ask the producer/director of this book series if they actually auditioned this guy! Also would like to know how Rick Riodan feels about having one of his marvelous books ruined.)

Historia
God’s people are hiding in plain sightTens of millions of Christians live in China today, leading double lives to hide from a government that relentlessly persecutes them. By day, Bob Fu was a teacher in a communist school; by night, he was a preacher in an underground house church network. This edge-of-your-seat book tells the true story of Fu’s conversion to Christianity, his arrest and imprisonment for starting an illegal house church, his harrowing escape, and his subsequent rise to prominence in the United States as an advocate for his oppressed brethren.

Christian Courage in China
Revisado: 11-24-23
While Bob Fu's story was exceptionally interesting, Hayden Lee's narration was so terrible I almost gave up near the beginning of the book. However, I pressed on all the way to the end because I wanted to hear the story. If you are really interested in this book, take my advice, READ THE PRINT VERSION! Hayden Lee slurred so many sounds together and slaughtered so many simple pronunciations that it felt like fingernails on a chalkboard. His problem (and being an R.N. maybe I picked up on this easier than a non medical person would) is that it sounds like Lee has enlarged adenoids!! He had a very difficult time pronouncing sounds BECAUSE his adenoids are causing him difficulty! How he ever was selected to read this book is beyond me. All that angst about the bad narration aside, the story is a real page turner. It sickens me to hear about the suffering of the Chinese people under the communist regime. Some of it was difficult to get through. Just a word of warning to the easily squeamish. I am so proud of Bob Fu for having the courage to fight the "dragon" that China is.

LOOOOVE this series!
Revisado: 10-24-23
Such a great denouement to the love story between Alfie and Emma! Sweet! I’m so sad the last book (17) is not available on Audible. 🥲 Sigh. This is definitely one of the best crafted, wittiest cozy mysteries you’ll ever find. Nathaniel Parker is PERFECT. I didn’t want them to end…but I guess you really can’t kill ALL the residents of Bunburry! If you are an Oscar Wilde fan you will enjoy this series even more!

In "Murder at the Mousetrap," the first Bunburry book, fudge-making and quaffing real ale in the local pub are matched by an undercurrent of passion, jealousy, hatred and murder - laced with a welcome dose of humour. Alfie McAlister has retreated from London to the peace and quiet of the country to recover from a personal tragedy. But an accidental death - which may have been no accident - reveals that the heart of England is far from the tranquil backwater he imagined.

Great novel!
Revisado: 08-10-23
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel set in beautiful India. Topics of “purda”, “caste”, “women’s reproductive and marital rights in Indian society” and “India’s complicated relationship with Britain prior to their independence” are deftly woven through a fascinating story of murder and palace intrigue. The book is written in a straightforward, uncomplicated style with just enough descriptions to not bog down the fast flowing plot. I found myself wanting to return to the book as quickly as I could after pushing pause to do other tasks. I look forward to reading more by Sumatra Massey. Sneha Mathan did a beautiful job with the narration.

Intrigue, action, racism, and triumph!
Revisado: 07-20-23
This is a crime/detection genre novel of the finest caliber! I wish I could give it six stars! Finally! An author who is able to create a detective novel with believable, likable heroes and believable, despicable villains without dragging the reader through gruesome scenes of torture or graphic scenes of sex and all without endless F bomb assaults! (I think there was one at the end. The villain was not too pleased about being found out!) What made this novel especially worth my accolades was the detailed look into Calcutta culture post World War I. I have a son-in-law from India, and, of course, hearing the descriptions of colonialism and pervasive racism was at times hard to read, but it was incredibly well done and ending made everything right! The narrator was superb! His voice was wonderful to listen to, and he nailed every accent. I highly recommend it.
