Historia
Calvin Coolidge, president from 1923 to 1929, never rated highly in polls, and history has remembered the decade in which he served as an extravagant period predating the Great Depression. Now Amity Shlaes provides a fresh look at the 1920s and its elusive president, showing that the mid-1920s was in fact a triumphant period that established our modern way of life: The nation electrified, Americans drove their first cars, and the federal deficit was replaced with a surplus.

Lessons 100 Years Later
Revisado: 12-26-24
Coolidge reminds us how vital fiscal discipline and a return to normalcy are after periods of upheaval like pandemics and world wars, showing that balanced budgets and stability can rebuild trust in government. His example should inspire modern conservatives, as he remains the last president to leave the federal government smaller than when he inherited it.
As good as it gets when it comes to American history biographies, shedding fresh light on an important era and an overlooked leader.
(I’ve also got a soft spot for the president who helped create and empower the Budget Bureau…)

Historia
Over just the last few decades, laws in this nation have exploded in number; they are increasingly complex; and the punishments they carry are increasingly severe. Some of these laws come from our elected representatives, but many now come from agency officials largely insulated from democratic accountability. In Over Ruled, Neil Gorsuch and Janie Nitze explore these developments and the human toll so much law can carry for ordinary Americans.

The growth of the administrative state, regulatory capture, and legal proceedings with no jury
Revisado: 09-16-24
Justice Gorsuch and Janie Nitze have put together some thought-provoking stories on the growth of the administrative state (and the penalties associated with it), regulatory capture, and the fleeting concepts of mens rea and lenity. Highly recommend!

The 28-Month Presidency
Revisado: 10-23-23
The short tenure of Ford’s time in the White House lends itself to Smith’s in-depth look at each decision made by the 38th president. A thoroughly enjoyable biography, the best of which reads like the script of The West Wing - with staff infighting, national crises, and legislative battles at a sporadic, unforgiving, and rapid pace.
Smith’s story demonstrates the impact the 28-month presidency of an ordinary man had on a nation reeling from Watergate and Vietnam.

Historia
At a critical moment in Jimmy Carter’s presidency, he gave a speech that should have changed the country. Instead it led to his downfall and ushered in the rise of the conservative movement in America. In What the Heck Are You Up to, Mr. President? Kevin Mattson gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the weeks leading up to Carter’s "malaise" speech, a period of great upheaval in the United States: the energy crisis had resulted in mile-long gas lines, inciting suburban riots and violence; the country’s morale was low and Carter’s ratings were even lower.

I’ve read through this book a few times and just listened to it for the first time. Excellent either way. Every American should listen to this speech today.
