This was a ton of fun and well-narrated! A gay romance that starts as a kidnapping, escalated when the kidnapped finds out he’s supposed to be unharmed and decides to be as annoying as possible, including playing “gay chicken” not realizing the kidnapper is also gay. Lots of fun, full of snark and humor and steamy moments.

Read in May because I couldn’t wait for the audiobook, then revisited on audiobook in November once it came out. Well worth the audio, JF Harding does a phenomenal job with a phenomenal story.
—————
“It was like what they said about feeding strays, only this one wanted sex all the time and ate his weight in Doritos.”
——————
“Somehow, Auggie avoided dying of embarrassment that day, although Fer grumped and stomped around most of the morning and made pointed comments about church and the bonds of marriage and infant Jesus weeping in his manger.”

May 2023. Book 4 of 4 in the mystery/suspense series about an unlikely partnership (and eventually a relationship) between a gay undergrad student and gay grad student who are studying Shakespeare and find themselves pulled into a mystery each year at the university.

Each book pulls some themes from a work of Shakespeare in a way that ties in both with character growth and with the case in some way. Book 4 features Hamlet, a big theme is Theo being stuck in an identity rooted in grief like Hamlet is, and Theo’s dissertation chapter he works on during the book is on Hamlet and grief.

This one is beautiful and at times devastating, with a fascinating mystery and our core characters continuing to grow as both individuals and in relation to each other. An emotional and fitting conclusion to the series.

“A Fault Against the Dead” by Gregory Ashe. Book 4 of 4 in series “The First Quarto.”

“Aston, you’ve got to take a deep breath. I can’t help if you’re like this.” He started to hiccup, his whole body quivering between sobs. I scooped up some snow and threw it in his face. He stopped crying.
——————
“Now, think of covalent bonds as something else. Not a theft, but—but an ongoing relationship, if you will. A friendship. Both atoms desire more out of their existence—in this case, to have a full outer shell of electrons. But they can achieve it only in partnership with another atom, by sharing one or more atoms.”
“Ok. I guess that makes sense.”
If Holmes heard me, though, he gave no sign of it. He struggled with the next words.
“Like a friendship, when sharing electrons in this way, both atoms become more stable. Their bond is more stable. It’s stronger than an ionic bond. They continue to share electrons, in the same way that people must continue to share experiences, emotions, and intimacy. They require ongoing effort and investment. Covalent bonds are often found in molecules; they allow individual atoms to become more than what they would be on their own.”
He stopped, the silence sudden and punctuated, and his throat moved reflexively.
——————
“Open this door right now,” Holmes said. “Or I will open it for you.” “Engage Daddy protocols,” I whispered. Fire flared in Holmes’s face.
——————
“Do you ever feel like there are a million of you, and it’s like a vending machine, and somebody’s pushing E7 because that’s the only one of you they want?”

June 2023. Book 2 of 3 in a mystery adventure centering a queer romance about teen amateur detectives in a modern version of reality in which Sherlock Holmes and company were real and their descendants are around.

Our main character is Jack Moreno, the janitor’s son at a school for wealthy troubled teens, where the descendants of Watson and Holmes go. When Jack stumbles on Watson’s body and finds himself and dad suspects for the murder, he and teen Holmes’ separate attempts at investigation eventually result in them begrudgingly working together to solve the mystery.

This is a blast, a touch lighter than some of Ashe’s other work though it still handles some difficult topics like poverty, loss of a parent, classism, bad parenting, living under the shadow of a legacy, etc. with compassion, insight, and sometimes humor.
Loved Jack and the first person narration, he is hilarious and determined and often foolhardy, and serves as a great foil to the reserved and withdrawn intellectual Holloway Holmes.

Highly recommend. Great intro point for Greg’s work since it’s a short series, a trilogy, and does some clever and unique things with the idea of a world where Holmes, Watson, etc. were real but maybe the version from the books and movies was more heroic than the real thing. It also has less physical intimacy than some of his other works since they are minors, which may be more appealing for some.
Note: like the Hollow Folk series, this is not YA though the leads are teens.

I got the first two on audible and will definitely get the third once it’s on audible, Greg Tremblay does a fantastic job, but I got the third on ebook for now since it just came out this last weekend and I simply could not wait.

Also apparently it’s on Hoopla, so if you’ve been curious about all my rave reviews for his work, go check it out!!!

Short story from the Amazon Originals series “Tresspass,” about a missionary who is challenged by how different the culture he visits is, and who talks about meeting “Hyena-Men.”

This was just okay for me. I listened to the audio narration which was performed well, it just didn’t wow me. Audible version was a free addition when I downloaded on kindle unlimited.

Book 6 in the MM romance thriller series about a family of psychopaths who kill evil serial killers a La “Dexter,” but also they are all adopted and gay and hot and fall in love with other gay hot people.

Liked this one quite a bit, though not my favorite in the series. Struggled a bit for working to set up a future spin-off series as well as including the obligatory cameos by all the previous couples, but still a successful guilty pleasure. The main character of this one, Archer, is featured less in the previous books than some others so I didn’t go in with many expectations or preconceived notions and was pleasantly surprised. I felt it was too heavy on the steamy scenes.
Really enjoyed his (platonic) relationship with friend/brother-in-law Noah.

Got the audiobook 1/2 by downloading it on kindle unlimited first. Narrator Liam Dicosimo always does a fantastic job and I find myself rounding ratings up when he narrates.

“Most people dealing with PTSD find some way of numbing themselves: drugs, alcohol, sexual excess—”
“Let’s hear more about that one,” Somers murmured into Hazard’s shoulder. Hazard pinched the inside of Somers’s thigh, and Somers yelped.
“—while other people depersonalize and dissociate. They often describe it as feeling dead inside, unable to connect with other people, unable to experience pleasure or love or affection, even with the ones who are closest to them.”

Last book of the second Hazard and Somers series of M/M romance mysteries, set in small-town Missouri.

The Keeper of Bees, the spree killer from the first book in the arc, “Rational Faculty,” seems to have returned; the same murder pattern (modeled after the Orpheus mythology) is occurring and targeting more queer individuals that Hazard and Somers know. With multiple queer friends missing, it feels like anyone they know could be the killer or another victim.

As always, 5/5 stars, phenomenal, amazing, perfect. Fascinating and complex mystery, emotional and relational growth, fleshed out flawed characters, some moments of angst but also humor and sweetness. We definitely see how far Hazard and Somers have come in the last 2 years, and Hazard’s worsening PTSD is addressed.

Incredibly stressful worrying about which missing characters might be injured, traumatized, or killed though! Taking a bit of a break before diving into another Gregory Ashe book for my poor nerves.

Listened to the audiobook on audible. As always, cannot recommend highly enough! But start with the first book in one of his series, for Hazard and Somers it would be “Pretty Pretty Boys.”

“The Keeper of Bees” by Gregory Ashe. Book 5/5 in the second series about them, “Hazard and Somers: A Union of Swords.”

Book 1 in a MM romance urban fantasy series about a human and a vampire that work together in the Vampire Related Crimes unit of the police.

Funny, snarky, banter, grump x sunshine, sexual tension but also silliness. This is my third series I’ve checked out by Alice Winters and they all seem to tick the same boxes, but I like those boxes so it’s fine by me. Quite a bit of fun with an interesting vampire human conflict and crime spree at the heart of it.

Got on Audible, I’m leaning toward liking this series the most out of them so far but I know I’m partly biased because of the excellent narrator Michael Ferraiuolo, and because it being book 1 means the grump of the couple hasn’t been de-grumped too much yet by love.
I downloaded on kindle unlimited first so the audible book was 1/2, definitely recommend doing this if you like any authors who are in kindle unlimited and have audiobooks you want (seems to be the case for a ton of MM romance and mystery series at least).
I’ll check out more in the series for sure but I didn’t love it so much that I’m rushing out to do so immediately.

MM romance crime thriller about a seasoned cop investigating drug trafficking and rumored to be dirty, and a rookie detective paired with him by IA.

This was great, not funny in the way Hitman Vs Hitman series is, but a solid good crime mystery and chemistry between our lead characters. I enjoyed it a lot as something less dense to listen to on and off (when I wasn’t up for China Miéville or Gregory Ashe recently, usually in the morning when my brain is still loading). I’ll definitely check out more of the series.

As always, loved the audio narration by Michael Ferraiuolo, he’s consistently high quality and brings personality and charm. Listened on audible.
