It was funny and cute in the way one would expect from Haley Cass. Lori Prince delivers another great performance. The characters are balanced even without having read the previous book. It’s good that it is more modern. In the beginning the flashback chapters were a little confusing but you get used to it by mid-point.

It would have to had been another book but I would have liked to see more of what happens next rather than the neat bow tied off ending. That skip forward ending just fell a little flat for me.

The story overall was ok. I expected better honestly. I’m a fan of Quinn Riley as a narrator so I gave this a try - but even she couldn’t make it enjoyable.

First Karin Kallmaker book I’ve read of listened to. I should have looked up more information on the book to see what year it came out in. The book came out in 2003, and I didn’t realize I needed to prepare myself for that time period where cell phones and the internet weren’t super popular.

My main complaint was the over usage of “I swear to freakin’ God” almost every time a character had an internalized monologue or that “dike” was said in every over sentence - and yes I am using the spelling for rocks rather than the intended by the book as to avoid vulgarity.
Perhaps it was just a different time 20 years ago. But the writer’s story was choppy and in the beginning muddled in parts with more than 3 characters.

Nothing great about it. But maybe it was 20 years ago. Some books stand the time of time - this one didn’t.

The story was ok. But the ending was too predictable and then the epilogue was just blah. The narrator didn’t help - only made it worse. Couldn’t tell who was talking most of the time or if it was an internal thought or just narration. Even though it was on sale for $4 I would definitely not do it over again.

The story is blah. The narration is cringe. Just don’t waste the time, money, or credit. Tried really hard over months and got

Nice and light. Not overly angst ridden - actual maybe no angst? Just some self doubt.

Good narration - a couple of the minor characters were annoying but I think they were meant to be.

It hit a couple of tropes and is predictable but again overall it’s entertaining, short and sweet. I nice casual listen.

This one was wordy for no reason. I never thought I would say something was too descriptive for me. But it’s like taking an hour to describe chipping paint on a wall. It was longer than it needed to be. It started off good. Then dragged. The bulk of the story takes place over the duration of one week but it felt like a year.

I’ve heard the narrator before but this was a weird recording where you can hear background noise and weird swallowing or like mouth sounds after long sentences. Which again the overly descriptive words probably just left them winded or their mouth dry.

The last chapter was lackluster and the ending too. The few chapters before the last were probably the best as more got done than the rest of the entire book combined.

The characters were not really likable. And there were no love to hate characters either. It was really just flat and drawn out.

There was potential but it just…didn’t make it.
Would not recommend. Unless you are super bored, and like to be told the same thing, but with different wording over and over.

This is not a slow burn. It’s fizzled out ember.

It’s a good YA book with magic, and makes queer characters more normalized while still showing how Hunter Regs hate and want to kill whatever is diffident from them as a parallel for acceptance of people. The main cast and side characters have representation across the board except for Asian Americans.

The first book in the series was good and I read this one right after. It started off strong but mid way it lulled and I took a few breaks or lost interest for a little bit. I’m glad I stuck it out as the last 12-15 chapters pick it back up.

There’s not overly perfect ending - it’s more realistic than a happily every after. And leaves room for another book.

There were definitely secret circle and motherland fort Salem vibes to it. If there’s a third book that features college and more blood witch background that would cool and I would read that.

I think I like that at least you get some understanding behind the why for the big bad boss, though maybe another one will go into Mid level bad bosses. And it did show just how messed up parents and culture and society can shape people from early on.

It was good. Slower than most Lee Winter’s books. Well written as always, but it dragged out a lot more than a normal slow burn. It could have been two books. I wish there had been more action - like fighting. Though on the topic of other action. That first alley scene was kind cringeworthy.

I’m glad this wasn’t my first Lee Winter book or it might have been my last. It sat in my library for awhile just because of the length but honestly I was disappointed.

It had all the proper elements, maybe it had too much? I don’t know the tempo was off and the lulls were many.

A fitting title for my thoughts on the book

I think I preordered this audible half asleep after a long time of aimlessly scrolling for books to discover. I didn’t remember preordering it, and was confused when I got the notification on my phone that my preorder was ready. Looking at the cover art and reading over the description, I didn’t think I would have chosen this title. It seemed so over done and blah. I hadn’t read anything previously from the author and was honestly on the fence about the narrator after two other titles. But boredom hit and I decided to try giving it a listen. I’m glad I did.

There’s something to be said about a book that takes the mundane, the overdone cliches, the things I’m not really interested it (like the holidays, kids, and etc.), and pleasantly surprises me. To take these things and write them so well, to give depth to the characters and have a plot that has its ups and downs without being overdone is refreshing.

Yes, obviously there were some predictable moments but the way they developed - I couldn’t help but smile here and there. It felt real. And to have a supporting character that was a child and key element but not being annoying - wow.

The narrator brought just as much depth and feeing into the story as the story itself. I’m not sure if I had been reading an actual book that I would have that rhythm and read the punctuations with the right effects. The pacing was perfect. The narrator definitely won me over with this listen.

It’s a cute story, that touches upon some difficult topics without being too much or too light - just balanced. It’s heartwarming really, and I feel like a sap admitting that.

It’s not overly sexual. There’s build up and progression that isn’t rushed. It just flows naturally, which seems to increasingly rare in books these days.

I wouldn’t have thought I would like the audible this much, especially enough to finish it in a day.

The ending though...

It felt perfectly right and yet I kind of wish there was an epilogue or a second book.

Suffice it to say, I’m glad I bought this preorder half awake, forgotten about it (so I couldn’t cancel it), and then have it a try. Like I said, the book’s title is very fitting for my thoughts on the book.

It was ok. Not bad but fell flat. There was nothing that stood out and it was boring. Took awhile to finish as it was so bland. The only reason I didn’t do 2 stars was for Angela Dawe. She was the most redeeming part of the Audible. And I can’t believe I’m thinking and writing this but... I finally heard AD voice a main character I just didn’t like the voice of.

I went into this weary but spent the credit because of great experiences with the narrator and wished I had gotten something else about 20 minutes in.

Sorry. It just felt like a wry formulated student essay, trying to force so many overdone themes and tropes together with not underlying depth of the story, writing, or character development. I guess it was cute as times but I just can’t explain it but it just didn’t make me feel anything but that I had wasted my time.

It’s like waiting for the bass to drop at a show and it just falls with a stumble, a whimper, and everyone is confused and not sure if they’re still waiting for something else or if this DJ was new.

If it’s free and you’re bored... maybe.
