Historia
Over the past two decades, Antony Beevor has established himself as one of the world's premier historians of World War II. His multi-award winning books have included Stalingrad and The Fall of Berlin 1945. Now, in his newest and most ambitious book, he turns his focus to one of the bloodiest and most tragic events of the twentieth century, The Second World War. Thrillingly written and brilliantly researched, Beevor's provocative account is destined to become the definitive work on World War II.

Historia
In a style reminiscent of John Cheever and Alice Munro, Michael Nye's second collection of stories, Until We Have Faces, contends with transfixing themes: marital and familial estrangement, ways of trespass, the intractable mysteries and frights of modern life, the uncertainty of knowledge and truth, the gulfs between people and the technology we use, the frailty of our economic lives - while underlining throughout the persistency of love. His consummate skill, penetrating wit, and unfailing emotional generosity are on full display in this fine new collection.

Memorable stories very well read. I really enjoyed the futuristic story of the terrorist ex-wife and the novella about the two basketball players, one of whom comes from a troubled home and uses alcohol and drugs.

Historia
It wasn't the life Marci Warhaft envisioned for herself. A good student who had been accepted into a prestigious theatre school, a doting mother with two young sons, and there she was taking it all off in front of paying customers to Bootylicious by Destiny's Child. The Good Stripper is an eye-popping journey: Warhaft reveals the punishing circumstances and self-destructive behaviors that shaped her early adulthood, including a bank-robbing stepfather, the loss of her beloved brother, eating disorders, and sexual misadventures during a dysfunctional marriage.

Not a memorable read nor a literary classic. Might be of some mild interest to those interested in weight and body image. The characters do not come alive, they are all shadowy, and there are many flaws with the production of this audiobook.

Historia
In this, the first prose history in European civilization, Herodotus describes the growth of the Persian Empire with force, authority, and style. Perhaps most famously, the book tells the heroic tale of the Greeks' resistance to the vast invading force assembled by Xerxes, king of Persia. Here are not only the great battles - Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis - but also penetrating human insight and a powerful sense of epic destiny at work.

Almost unreadable classic
Revisado: 01-09-22
This book was superbly read by David Timson. It falls into the category of an important but almost unreadable classic alongside works like Moll Flanders, Don Quixote, Wilhelm Meister, etc. Inconsequential events, tons of names, and no one and nothing to care about.

Historia
Once in a generation, a historian will redefine his field, producing a book that demands to be read or heard - a product of electrifying scholarship conveyed with commanding skill. Diarmaid MacCulloch's Christianity is such a book. Breathtaking in ambition, it ranges back to the origins of the Hebrew Bible and covers the world, following the three main strands of the Christian faith.

Thorough and Accessible
Revisado: 10-27-20
I am not yet finished with this book. It is thorough and accessible and very well written. What an ambitious project! It is definitely a history of “Christianity” and not “Christians.” What was religious life like for an average peasant in Charlemagne’s empire? What was religious life like for a “higher-up” of the same era? Were there any atheists? What about diet and morals and work as they relate to religious practice? The emphasis is obviously theology, as it should be, but I wouldn’t have minded another five hours on the way people experienced their faith. Will Durant’s The Age of Faith covers much of that, but Durant’s book is 70 years old.

Historia
In this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, historian Barbara Tuchman brings to life the people and events that led up to World War I. This was the last gasp of the Gilded Age, of Kings and Kaisers and Czars, of pointed or plumed hats, colored uniforms, and all the pomp and romance that went along with war. How quickly it all changed...and how horrible it became.

Brilliant but not for audio
Revisado: 10-03-20
This book is superb and superbly narrated. However, it hasn’t made (nor can it really make) the translation to audiobook form. This book requires maps and more maps, and pictures too, in order to be fully understood and appreciated. I suspect the author would have agreed with me and others who’ve mentioned this.

Historia
In the winter of 1945, in Upper Egypt, an Arab peasant discovered a large vessel. Inside were scrolls containing a hitherto unseen book. One of these books was the Gospel of Thomas. Here before you is the translation of that book. This is the contemporary translation of the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas with Greek and Coptic verses. Included are Bible parallels and commentary placed within the flow of the text to explain and expand these amazing verses.

In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville, a young French aristocrat and civil servant, made a nine-month journey through the eastern United States. His insightful work has become one of the most influential political texts ever written on America.

There are times when the word or words that need to be stressed are not stressed, so the points of certain passages are often not clear enough. This narrator is adequate, on the whole, but too robotic.

Charming, vibrant, witty and edifying, The Life of Samuel Johnson is a work of great obsession and boundless reverence. The literary critic Samuel Johnson was 54 when he first encountered Boswell; the friendship that developed spawned one of the greatest biographies in the history of world literature. The book is full of humorous anecdote and rich characterization, and paints a vivid picture of 18th-century London, peopled by prominent personalities of the time.
